See this page for instructions on resetting your waste ink counter.
The steps for your model are as follows:Enter SERVICE MODE -- By pressing Menu, Copy, Scan, Copy, Copy
Select TEST MODE.
Select 8 PRINTER TEST in TEST MODE.
Select 3. [EEPROM CLEAR].
Select 0. [INK COUNT].
Press the Set key.
Press the Stop/Reset key (returning to the state of 3), and then press the ON/OFF key.
I'm looking everywhere, but I can't find a picture of your printer's control panel so I can look for the corresponding key!
On HP printers, the "Set" key is a green key with a check mark on it.
Perhaps your Canon has a similar key that is used to "enter" whatever menu item is selected?

instructions ok as far as 'Press SET key'
Don't seem to have one.

Thanks,
I switched off and restarted - to go through the process again - and everything seems OK. Thanks for help. I still don't know why the message came up, it would be natural to assume the waste tank is full, if message reads 'waste tank is full'. Silly me. I just hope I don't get an overflow.
Regards
Phil
