Air conditioner stops completely. Cannot turn it

Could be the connector at the back of the instrument panel, or a bad connection in the wiring harness. Could also be a weak ignition switch.

Have you tried pushing the reset button on the power plug? If the unit overheats the reset button will click on and the a/c will turn off. In order to turn it back on you will have to push the reset button.

there is a reason we just need to find it,open the doors one at a time and press the switch that turns the light off. do they all work? what is the complete model # starts with 3 digits then a period then 6 or so more #s.

The compressor/condenser is being called all the time. The reason it goes off is because the evaporator (indoors) freezes up when the fan is told to turn off by the thermostat. This further cooling lowers the low side pressure below the low limit switch point turning off the compressor unit.
Solution: Make sure the thermostat is wired correctly. Green wire is usually the compressor wire but maybe not.

Could be a bad control switch, relay or connection and ground at motor itself. Since it's intermittent, check voltages when it's working, then again when it's not. Wherever voltage stops, that's what you need to replace. Don't wait on this...when completely inoperative it gets much harder to find the problem!

This is very possible. Whenever a compressor is unplugged it should rest for about 5 minutes before turning it back on. This is because the refrigerant needs to balance. Otherwise a large amount of amperage may be required to start the compressor as it tries to compress to much refrigerant at one time. I would first check the main breaker for that outlet before jumping to any conclusions. Then let it cool completely before trying again. If this still does not work, you may need to bring it to a service center.
