I have a Gateway FDP1760 17' tft lcd flat panel Monitor. I bought it 5 years ago. Within the last few months there have been issues with the color black. It is very light and looks as though the words need to be bolded to see properly. However the colored font seems to be working okay especially if the font is large. I recently opened up Excel and cannot make out some of the items on the tool bar. What do you think is the problem?

first of tell me is it a TFT or LCD. the LCD life is not more then 5 years. if it is tft then check the back panel of ur TFT, the high voltage flyback capacitor or boost capictor is loosing power.

Sounds like the inverter is broken or have a short circuit. This is a common failure on TFT displays.

This sounds like a typical Capacitor in the Power Supply fault. Some people take them apart and replace the capacitors, however I recommend that you get a "Quote" for repair, as these often "Chain Fault" and I have seen a lot of disappointed would be fixers.

bonannorl, Maybe it can be fixed. You did not give any history of unit. Only "now" stuff. Is unit covered by Gateway warranty? How old is unit? Date of manufacture? Did unit work fine connected to your pc and this black or black n blank screen thing suddenly happen? Is screen also BLANK? Have you swapped-in old monitor to prove PC is OK? Your CCFL back-lit lcd monitor no different than any other brand in it's basic design and operation. Get into my fixya profile and read some of my testimonials and solutions to black or black n blank screen problems to help in your decision to DIY fix or contract out needed repair work. Most likely 2485w has problem with it's internal "switch-mode-power-supply"/"ccfl inverter supply"!! Let me know more info about unit.

The problem is not the setting on your monitor...The problem is the backlight inverter located inside the upper and lower edge of your screen..
It is busted. The backlight inverter is the light source responsible for the displaying image on your screen. If these were busted.. then the only thing you will see is black screen.

It is very risky for you to replace it by yourself if you don't have the knowledge and the right tools to open the back of your lcd..My suggestion is to bring your monitor to a credible technician to have your backlight inverter replace. if there is warranty for your lcd, please avail this.
