Question about AOpen DUW1616/ARR DVD RW Dual Layer Burner

It is not detected as a DVD it is only labeled as a standard CD thought DVD's can be read but burnt, how can i fix that problem?, i already tried downloading drivers from AOpen.com but everything remains the same

thank you for your support, i have already done and it doesn't work yet, my dvd drive is AOpen DUW1616/ARR double layer i installed the firmware from two diferen mirrors and nothing yet, what do you think?

Have you checked how the drive is listed in device manager? You may need to find the Firmware for your model of drive and Flash it. This usually isn't as hard or scary as it sounds. :)

Do you have Nero burning software? They have some useful Drive reading tools and problem solvers. I had a drive that would not burn dual layer until I installed their software. It sorted the problem straight away.

There are 2 assemblies inside it.
One works to read/write CD media.
One works to read/write DVD media.
So, your device is "half-broken".
Replace it.

Hi rossclark3,

Try to check the jumper settings of your DVD/CD ROM if it is properly assigned as Master or Slave.
Afterwards, also check the cable connecting the DVD/CD ROM to the motherboard.
Finally, restart your PC and check the BIOS Setup if it can already detect your DVD/CD ROM.

Does not read burnt discs? how do I fix it

It may the problem of lense inside DVDRW which helps to read the cd if the lense get spoilt the DVDRW wont detect burnt discs

No solution yet? I think I have the same problem. Dell Inpiron 530 with same drive. I think my problem is hardware failure as Microsoft disk application can't fix, Dell diagnostics suggests hardware problem. Still I tried deleting drivers so windows would reinstall. Even tried going into regedit to no effect. Just can't read what is in drive. CD/DVD does not make the usual disc spinning sound.

I think I'm screwed. Warrenty ran out November 2010. Was having problems before that, but I failed to act on it. From searching internet, this drive may be a dud. Mine failed in less than a year.

If not ( Cant read CD or DVD ) then most likely the lens on the ODD is already busted. or ODD cant be detected then just go to the Website support.toshiba.com and download the latest update for the ODD. And install the driver on your NB and restart the NB. If still the same then the ODD you have is already busted what you need to do is to buy a new ODD.

Is you burner a dvd writer? FYI only dvd readers and writers can read dvd's . CD writers can't read dvd's.

Try to use another DVD. you told you tried you old DVD from your toshiba. maybe is not compatible.. try in another.. then use your DVD in another laptop if the same from problem.check your board and DVD connection...if this under warranty bring to warranty..

if in Bios also can not detect this is hardware problem...

This ahs to with speed of recording of the CD/DVD try reading CD/DVD burnt at a lower speed like 16x.

Most DVD writers has low maximum reading speed as compared to CD-ROMs.

You can try burning a CD on it and then reading it, if reads then it shows that other cd were burnt at faster speed than it can read.

If it read lower speed CDs then you can just add an additional DVD/CD-ROM just to read faster speed disks.

Drive wont recognize any media

This is usually caused by dirty drive lens, too scratched CDs or CD burnt at faster speed than your ROM can read. (I am assuming that your pc detect the CD drive and has no hardware conflict with it).

Try reading an unscratched prerecorded (original CD), if it does not read this as well then your lens are dirty, try using a CD lens cleaner if these dont work then you need to open your ROM and use a highly volatile organic lens cleaner chemical.

Well, I've seen CD-drives that would re-open, when you try to close them -- it is _falsely_ detecting a "jam" as the tray is closing, and then just re-opens the tray, rather than "forcing" itself to close.

Replacing the CD-drive is the only way to fix that type of "false-positive" jam-detection conditions.

But, since you've done that, either you were unlucky-enough that the replacement drive was also "defective", or, you have a computer-virus on your computer that is maliciously issuing commands to the CD to "open-the-tray".
