I have purchased x3 new memory cards. When inserted into the camera I ger the message Memory card error. I do not get this message when the cards are inserted into a different camera. When trying to reformat the card the reformat option is greyed out. The tabs on the cards are in the correct position

The S50 uses SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card, and will not work in the S50. You will have to confine your choices to cards 2GB and smaller.
Let's work on the camera first.
1) Turn the camera off and remove the battery and the card.
2) Put the battery back in without the card and turn it on.
3) Turn the camera off and insert the CF card.
4) Turn the camera back on again.
See if that takes the message away.
If it doesn't leave me a comment and we go to step 2.

First, make sure that the new memory card does not have the protect tab in the lock position. The new card must be unlocked and formatted before your camera will be able to use it. Also, make sure that the size card that you have purchased has not over shot the ability of your camera. I think that a 2 GB card is as large as you can use. Just because the card fits into the slot does not mean that the camera will address it!
This error message means that the memory card is write-protected. To take a picture, turn off the camera. Then insert a new card or change the storage location to internal memory
This error message indicates that there is no more space on the memory card in the camera.
To resolve this problem, do one of the following:
Turn off the camera and insert a new memory card.
Transfer or delete pictures from the memory card.
Change the storage location to use the internal memory.
