Go to menu option and choose the option fax and set the parameter like auto receive or manual set the ring auto answer mode after certain ring. If it is in auto receiving mode it will receive the fax after the ring which you set. Make sure the phone wire which you insert in fax machine getting proper dial tone and getting out going calling facility.

The scanner in your FAX is nothing working -- i.e., "100%-black" or "100%-white", and so what is transmitted is what the scanner has scanned, improperly.

just reinstall the entire printer software

Call the receiving fax number from a regular phone and listen for fax tones. They may have given you the wrong number.

sounds like your printer is not properly installed try downloading latest drivers from hp

Press the Menu button and there is option to set-up select that option and there is another option call fax set-up there will be three option.
Fax recieve set-up , Fax send set-up and all faxes set-up from these three options you can set-up fax on your printer.

While its possible, I doubt your doing it wrong...

However, Fax machines will not send when attached to a digital phone network, used over IP phones, or in conjunction with DSL service without the lines being conditioned. This is a small device which hides the higher frequency noise from the fax machine. Any sort of signal shared on the lines may interfere with sending, recieving, or both. If you use DSL for example, I'd almost guarentee this is part of your problem.
