How do i remove the chuck from a ridgid hammer drill

Assuming that the drill is still operating, I suggest that you get a replacement chuck, To remove the old chuck, insert the chuck key in the cogs on the left hand side as you hold the drill facing outwards, then using a hammer tap the chuck key firmly so that the chuck will revolve anti clockwise. Replacing the chuck us the reverse of the above procedure.

The chucks on these drills are put on not only VERY tight but usually with some lok-tite to boost so they don't come off easy. In my shop we usually lock a 1/2" hex driver in the chuck and use a 1/2" impact wrench to knock them loose. It usually takes a few seconds to come loose. Another method is to lock the short end of a 1/2" allen wrench in the chuck so that it sticks straight up with the drill standing up. Then lay the drill on its side with the top at the edge of your bench and the allen wrench sticking over the side of the bench. NOTE: The chuck follows the lefty-loosey, righty-tighty rule, the chuck screw is reverse thread. Have someone firmly hold the drill and then hit the end of the allen wrench until the chuck comes loose. Once you break it free it will spin off easily. You do need to put the new one on with lok-tite and as tight as you possibly can then lok-tite the screw and tighten it as much as you can by hand.

Open the chuck fully and look inside, there should be a screw there that has to be removed to remove the chuck in view of the fact that it is a reversable drill and the chuck cannot be screwed off like a conventional inudirectional drill.

There are one-way (non-reversible) and two-way (reversible) drills. Mine is one-way. Methods for chuck removal are different for these two types.
Procedure for one-way (non-reversible) drills:
Drills of this type have no chuck screw, so one have to hold the spindle with a wrench, than to sharply strike the wrench with a hammer to spin it off.
Procedure for two-way (reversible) drills:
Open the chuck up and in the bottom is a screw that holds the chuck on the shaft.The screw turns in a clock wise motion to be removed and then you can top the chuck off the shaft.

The spade bit sold with the hammer drill was actually too large for the hammer drill. We found that the spade bit had over heated (not from overuse or heavy use as only two ladies were using the hammer drill) but because the bit was too large it put too much weight on the drill. The bit had to be removed from the chuck using a hammer and force causing a bearing to come out and the chuck now needs repair. Solution repair the chuck on the hammer drill and buy a lighter spade bit. Then continue jackhammering the cement out of the shower cubicle.
