Testing remote control:
The remote control puts out IR (InfraRed) signal that human eyes cannot see, to find out if the remote is sending out the signal or not you just point the remote at the digital camera’s Lens (Digital Camera can detect IR), you should see flashing light on the camera’s screen when any one of the remote button is pushed. If you do see the flashing on the camera, then the problem is in the TV IR receiver or the main logic board; more troubleshooting with scope will be needed to look at the signals.

Can the Ex link port be used to reset my Samsung TV?

This is a common problem with 3-year-old + Samsung 50-65 inch TV's. This advice is given with the pretext that you know how to be safe and use tools.
Locate the IR sensor on the front of the TV. Remove the stand and place it face down on a carpet. Be prepared to be able to leave it there for a few days as your replacement needs to ship. Remove all the screws from the rear panel to locate the IR or touch function/IR combo board. Carefully remove the board, get the board number that is located on the side you can not see without removing it. Since I do not know this number as there are different versions, this is a sample if what the IR board should look like. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41wWeOocaHL.jpg
Replace it with a new one. $30 max. Put it back together and you can control your TV again.

Remote won't work. Tried new batteries, reprogramming, etc. Universal Remote doesn't work either. LG #42PC5DC

Hi,
To confirmed if the remote control is working fine, aim the remote control sensor(IR emitter) directly to your cellphone camera. While pressing any button key on the remote control, you can see the flash of an infrared emitted by the remote control if it is working fine.

If you've confirmed that the remote control emitted an infrared but still the tv won't communicate with it, this is an indication of faulty IR sensor board of the TV. Check if there's an obstruction from the IR receiver in front. Keep away all of it, clean the plastic window of the IR receiver with soft clean cloth.
If the symptoms still persist, you have to replace the IR sensor board. Check the actual part no. of the board before ordering.

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!

I have just bought a brand new remote for my Phillips 42 inch LCD tv from a reputable phillips website as the old one was not working (I recently bought it from my mate and his kid had eaten the on button...

Sounds like the IR sensor in the TV may be faulty, since you have now tried a couple remotes. Make sure nothing is on the IR sensor like tape, plastic, etc. IR sensor repairs are a fairly cheap and easy repair that can be done at your local tv repair shop. If you are still in warranty you can call Philips and tell them that you tried 2 remotes (1 brand new) on the TV and neither work. They should offer you a repair option. If you have any questions regarding your Philips warranty let me know.

Remote control stopped working so i purchased a new remote control that doesnt work so now i am presuming it is the tv sensor itself

Brand of the TV? Yes it can be the IR receiver or the REMOTE switching jack if it has one in the back of the TV.

1) Test the remote:
The remote control puts out IR (InfraRed) signal that human eyes cannot see, to find out if the remote is sending out the signal or not you just point the remote at the digital camera's Lens (Digital Camera can detect IR), you should see flashing light on the camera's screen when any one of the remote button is pushed. If you do see the flashing on the camera, then the problem is in the TV IR receiver or the main logic board; more troubleshooting with scope will be needed to look at the signals.

2) If the remote checked out OK, then look at the back of the TV for the "REMOTE INPUT", use a mini-phone plug and insert the plug ino the remote input jack in and out a couple times to clean the switch contacts that select between the front IR receiver of the TV or the rear panel IR input jacks.

Sounds like problem is with TV. Make sure the remote sensor on the TV is not blocked, it is located at the lower right part of the front of the TV.

My verizon fios remote control stop to control the 65" cinema series toshiba tv.the remote seems to be ok.The oryginal tv remote doesnt control it also.I think that there is something wron with the tv...

Yes, most likely the sensor is at fault - more precisely it's connections to the motherboard are iffy. You must take the back cover off the tv and reseat them. While you are there check their soldering points - with age they tend to melt and get loose.
