If you are trying to use an old sim-card from another phone you may find that it won't recognize it.

The older sim cards just aren't up to the job the newer handsets require so now we have more powerful and higher voltage sim-cards.

Try a sim card from a friend with a new handset and see if that works in your phone.

You may have to go get a new sim.

How to unlock your Blackberry to any network

How to Enter Unlock Codes on BlackBerry Bold (9000), 8800, 8820, Curve (8300, 8310, 8320), Javelin (8900), Gemini (8520, 9300), & Onyx (9700):
Note: NO SIM is needed to unlock the phone. After phone is unlocked, remove the battery, insert SIM as desired and re-insert the battery. Phone MUST be restarted to use the new SIM card.

1) Power on
2) Go to Settings
3) Go to Options
4) Go to Advanced Options
5) Go to Sim Card
6) HOLD ALT and press: mep2 (Please note that you will NOT see what you type on the screen) *
7) It will ask you for the unlock code. Enter it and then press trackball to confirm and your phone is unlocked!

* If your phone is a 9700 or 9000 that requires a second code (ie.Bell), please repeat until step 6 and press mep4 to enter the second code.

You can try sites like this for the mep2 or mep4

How do i know that it really locks on holster

Insert another sim card of another service operator, you'll see what it is and how it does reacts with your phone. If it's locked to holster, the other sim card will never be accepted by your phone, maybe you'll be asked to enter a code or etc..etc..

It's also possible that the phone is locked to only one sim card, you'll be able to find out when you insert a sim card of the same network.
If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.
