One way to re-set the password is to remove th CMO battery inside the laptop but this requires taking it apart. Leave it out for 5-30 min.
The non legit XP Pro problem is probably Microsoft's WGA (windows genuine advantage) update. I have been hearing from a lot of users that they get this warning even though they legally purchased copies of XP.
Do This:
Rename the two file wgatray.exe and wgalogon.dll in /windows/system32/
and reboot
There are lots of free malware removers and free online anti virus programs. Do a Google search.
Let me know if you need any more help.
The disk cell real time clock (RTC) battery, I called it CMO above, is located under the memory expansion slot compartment cover.
The notebook uses a CR1220 lithium disk cell battery. When replacing the battery, insert the battery with the "+" sign facing up.
Glad to hear you're making progress.
Good Luck

Hi
The malware program modified files and slowed the laptop so much I opted to reinstall XP, not repair the existing copy and it gave me the option to set up as a new administrator. It has 4 minutes to go before it completes then I will see what happens. I thought about the the RTC/bios battery but did not realy want to take the thing to bits.... Lazy not nervous.
Sorted
reinstalled XP Pro no counterfiet notice, no password blocking........NO data files, or software. I always tell people to back up the hard drive, should have listened to my own advice. Never mind it was a cheap second hand machine and it will only have the software I want on it, and I will get over the loss of photographs and my vehicle records. Oh! well....
Thanks to anyone who helped.
Brian.
