SOURCE: Maytag Quiet Series 300/Dishwasher leaving gritty stuff on dishes

My model is simillar Cheri's. Every couple years I have to remove the plastic spray bars. They are held on by a simple torque screw. Once removed you will see debris plugging many of the holes. I have found this on all 4 of my spray bars. This debris prevents the right amount of water in the wash and rinse cycles. The upper spray bars seem to be the worse. This explains the trouble most folks have with glasses in the upper rack. Also check the docking station. You will fiind it along the back wall of your unit. The plastic tubes on the backside of each rack will slide into a hole in the docking station. After a few years the rubber seal in the docking station will be worn away. Once this happens, it prevents the correct water pressure to the upper rack. The replacement part snaps into place and cost about $25.

SOURCE: My dishwasher is leaving gritty, sandy particles

Dishwashers have a part usually called a separator or accumulator which traps the dirt from the water during the wash cycles while the water is continuously recycled to clean the dishes. At the end of the cycle the separator is flushed out and the trapped dirt goes down the drain. If it doesn't get flushed out the dirt builds up till it starts showing up on the dishes. Some separators have a hole on top and one on bottom with a valve which stops up one hole or the other depending which cycle it's running. The valve can be stuck or broken causing the problem.

SOURCE: When wash dishes, there is gritty like food on all

This is a problem caused by:

1. Spray arms not having enough water pressure. Be sure the spray arms are correctly placed without gaps, cracks or any other problem

2. Hot water not hot enough. Check the hot water temperature and/or the settings of your dishwasher.

Keeps leaving dishes gritty after wash.... Have cleaned everything possible

Do you live in a region with hard water? Most detergents don't work very well with hard water because phosphate is now outlawed as an ingredient in dishwasher detergent. Weird but true. Here's a map to show the water hardness in the US.

Grit in clean glasses and on dishes

Mary do you have a water softener? If so, only use 1 tablespoon of dry dishwashing detergent per wash. Don't use tablets or liquid soaps. Too much soap will wear down the items you wash, leave streaks and pock your dishes. That might be what the sandy grit is. Also, to get rid of the grit inside of your washer you can buy a special dishwasher cleaner at almost any hardware store. Always try to use a rinse-aid. Make sure your drain filters are clean. Hope this helps. Jewels

Sandy grit left on dishes.

I was having a different issue with the same model but I think my issues solution might help yours. My dishwasher was not draining properly. It was the air gap that sits on top of the counter by the sink. It was clogged. We removed it and cleaned it out. Maybe if your air gap is slightly clogged as well it is not allowing the dirty water to flow out properly leaving you with gritty dishes. Hope this helps.

Gritty/sandy feeling on dishes from dishwasher

You could only check the basics. Since the dishes are clean, it means they went through the wash cycle. It also means that that the holes on the washer arm are not blocked. If they were salty and dirty the wash arms would be something to check. And since they came out feeling like salt is on them its possible they didn't rinse and its also possible the dirty water didn't drain. Were your drain and fill hoses checked or did the techs just check the dish washing machine itself? Its also possible the water for rinse is not hot enough. Before the rinse cycle comes around try running the hot water at your kitchen faucet. Any other issues may be within the cycling of the machine.

We get a gritty / sandy residue. what can I do?

The cause may not be your dishwasher.
Especially hard water may leave the residue. If you don't have that problem when you hand-wash, then check your pipes. Homes more than 40 years old may have galvanized pipes that eventually rust on the inside. The grit could be grains of rust from the pipes. If you do have galvanized pipes (rather than copper) then you may need to replace them. You could put in a filter as a temporary work-around, but that will eventually clog with the gritty material.

White Residue

most likely it is your detergent. palmolive eco is notorious for leaving a white chalky residue on dishes. try this out before calling a service tech: put unclean glasses in the dishwasher and in your soap dish and rinse cycle cup put 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar. if it cleans (or improves) your dishes, then your detergent is the culprit.
