Sorry, dude, this player only works with Windows XP. It doesn't even work with Vista. It was neither past-proof nor future-proof.

Could a driver problem cause a mp3 player not to be read by your laptop?

Yes, the drivers have to be installed in order for the computer to identify any device attached to it.
If your laptop is a windows machine you can check whether drivers are installed by entering device managerand checking whether there are any items under the "other devices" drop down. The exclamation mark on that tab indicates that the drivers are not installed.
If your mp3 is attached to the computer and not listed there it will be in need of the appropriate drivers

Computer will not recognize mp3 player

Find the MP3 player in the device manager, delete it, then plug it in again and see if Windows recognizes it and reinstall the drivers properly.
If on the second try windows does not install the device drivers properly, find it in the device manager right click on it and click update drivers

Software and drivers are only available for Windows XP, but may also work with 2000.

Check to see if the Philips Device Manager recognises the drive.

Note: the player does not show as a removable drive.

Also make sure you have Windows Media Player 10, and use this to try and transfer files with the Sync function.

Download driver

The TH1101 requires Windows 2000 (SP3), Windows XP (Service Pack 1 or higher) or Windows Vista. All of these OS's will recognize the player without the need to install drivers.
