I have followed the troubleshooting instructions and nothing is happening. the keypad or the remote will not work. The test and reset are working, I've unplugged it to try and reset the controls, but nothing.

These remotes don't loose the programming code when a battery goes dead, most likely the remote or the board on the opener went bad, do any other remotes work? You can take the remote to an auto parts store and test it there. (They have a tester for key fobs)
test use the digital camera or cell when you hit any key the LED must be ON see the picture attached.. Otherwise open the r.control and clean the keypads for dirty, oxide, etc use contacts cleaner.

You don't need the current code. What you need to do is press and immediately release the smart button and then walk over to your keypad and enter any 4 digit code you like. If this doesn't work your keypad is bad.
Follow the procedure to reload the codes. One usually has to hit a reset button on the head and then follow a sequence to sync your remote to the head.
