Depends what machine you are pinging! It could be normal depending on your reception to your router or a site on the other side of the world. Connected directly to a router by wire should be less than 10ms.

win xp is no longer being serviced by microsoft so patches to get different drivers to install or work are no longer being upgraded

Are you using your ISP's software? I had that problem with BT's home hub thingies, the G202 user interface would load up then either crash or disappear. I uninstalled all BT related stuff and then things went fine.
Do you run any firewall and anit-virus software at start-up?
This will be happening because of a driver conflict.
Uninstall all drivers to do with adapter, then re- install your Zyair software and then plug in your adapter, but force windows to look where you have downloaded the driver in other words not automatically install but manually when the option pops up.
It may be you have to connect your adapter first then install drivers.
