I have a dell dimension 9100 and was trying to remove malware/virus that could only be removed in safe mode. A site explained the msconfig command and that you could force the computer to open in safe mode that way. Problem now is that apparently the safe mode is corrupted or blocked and the PC won't boot in any safe mode method and now it won't boot in normal mode either since I changed the msconfig settings. I have a CD with an ISO file that is supposed to allow the PC to boot off of the CD drive but that hasn't worked either. I went into the setup and moved the CD/DVD-ROM drive to the #1 slot on boot up and all I keep getting is the floppy disk error message even though there is no floppy drive on my PC. Is there anything else I can try to do? Thanks!

install malware bytes from a trusted site update it and the definitions then reboot your pc tapping f8 and go into safe mode. in safe mode run malware bytes. once cleaned reboot and repeat process. remember to delete any restore points as this can cause the virus to return. you can also run ccleaner and clean the registry as viruses tend to wreak havoc on reg files
Good probability that the motherboard or other component were damaged in the surge
See if you can boot to Safe mode (F8 at boot) if not then see if you can boot to a WIndows CD
If the system is not completing POWER on testing then check this information

Trying using a boot disk to see if your data is still there. I've seen this happen before and the virus had infected several of the files required for the computer to boot. When the virus scanner cleaned the files and the computer rebooted, the system files were gone. What ever you do, do not reformat the hard drive or use a system restore disk until you are sure that you have no data that is recoverable on the drive.
Try disabling apps in start up by typing msconfig in start menu. Or try booting in safe mode(press f8 key when rebooting) and try doing a virus/malware scan or disable start up apps in safe mode also.!
you have a malware/virus/worm, reboot and press the f8 key as soon as you see the splash screen, enter into safe mode, if you get to win safe mode run anti-virus software to remove and repair win registry, depending on what kind of infection you may be able to recover from it if not backup all of your work on flash drive ect, and re- install/recover your pc using the recovery disk.email me at; [email protected]
try to boot from the antivirus bootable cd, and scan the system, if virus found it will remove the viruses in the system, then next time you can boot n normal mode.
Boot the computer into safe mode. Run full-system anti-virus scans to ensure that the system is virus free and to remove any infections that may be present. Reboot system.
Instructions for booting into safe mode: 1) Start system 2) As system is starting, press F8 key 3) Boot menu will come up asking how you want to boot - choose Safe Mode and press ENTER 4) Your computer will start with limited services, no internet connection, etc. This will allow you to check the system and scan for viruses without interference from non-essential services.
Let us know how it turns out.
Hope this helps. Please take a moment to rate this solution. Thanks.
