The most common cause of the problem you just described is a lid switch malfunction or lid strike (actuator) problem. Symptoms may include, filling and stopping on the intial fill cycle, stopping right after the wash cycle, not advancing to rinse or spin cycles, and a wash tub that will not drain.

NOTE: If the washer works intermittently by shaking it, it sounds like you have a loose or broken switch.

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike" or "Actuator") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because it does NOT have a lid strike (actuator) and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This type of switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator rod by bending it slightly.

NOTE: You do not have to drain or bail the water from the washer tub to perform this repair. Once a defective lid switch is replaced, the washer should drain normally.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The average price of a replacement lid switch for this model washer is about $15 - $20 if you perform the repair yourself. Prices will vary between sites so shop and compare. If you have questions, or need additional assistance, please post back and let me know. This is a very simple repair that you can easily perform without the assistance of a repairman.
NOTE: Whirlpool manufactured washers have a self-leveling assembly for the rear feet that can become unleveled if the washer is shaken violently. The process to re-level the washer is simple. The following link explains how:

If this advice does not help you enough, repairclinic.com has a Repair Manual you can order to assist you with all your repairs. The part number is 1170635 and is priced at about $20.

Searspartsdirect.com also has a repair manual for about the same price. Part number 4314044L. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Plastic arm with a spring on it flew out of back of macine, spin cycle is erratic

that is the out of balance switch arm, by the sounds of it the suspension assembly is worn and the washer is shaking too much when spinning and has snapped the arm off, be careful if you use it now as theres nothing to stop it walking across the room if it goes out of balance.

It was spinning and started jumping around. Know now it needs new shocks. BUT THEN it stopped mid cycle. Door lock light on but no further action.

IT MAY BE UR SHOCKS BUT COULD ALSO BE THE DAMPER STRAPS, THE COUNTER WEIGHTS, BALANCE SPRINGS ETC ETC U HAVE TO REMOVE PANEL OR CABINET AND HAVE A LOOK
YOU MAY BE ABLE TO UNPLUG IT A FEW MINUTES AND RESET MOTOR BOARD./

Spin cycle suddenly stopped.

I need more info about the machine. Does it make any noise when the start button is pressed, if you can hear the motor turning then more than likely your belt is either after slipping off the drum or breaking. you should be able to access the belt either by the back of the macine or the top to see if the belt is broke or just after slipping. Another problem it could be is that the capacitor in your machine could have blown. To test this you press start, open the door of the machine, spin the drum by hand and close the door before the drum comes to a stop, if the drum continues to rotate after you close the door then you know it is the capacitor that is blown, this needs to be replaced either by an electrician or a specialist as it is possibe to connect the capacitor wrong and the result would be the capacitor exploding damaging your hand. Always plug out the machine before opening the top or back of the machine....

Can't stop cycle

You probably have some other issue with the machine if it won't stop, but the machine may also not be spinning the mat out because the load is unbalanced. If you put it in on spin only, watch to see if it actually spins up to speed or not. You will see it rotate the drum back and forth a couple of times - it is sensing the weight of the load and trying to balance it. I the machine can't balance it, it will never spin up to max speed. If this happens, put a few other items in the washer with the heavy item (they need to be of similar weight - like some towels or a heavy jacket or something) and try again. Good Luck

Spin basket weld gone causing loud knocking on spin cycle

front load washers are a great inovation into our modern society that being said they are a delicate balance of moving parts the main bearing plays a very important roll in keeping the machine balanced during the spin cycle I wouldn,t do one without the other . you're absolutly right too much $$ for a 4 year old machine call Electrolux plead your case and see if the will dicount the price of a new macine at least the value of the basket Good Luck

Sounds like the clutch is slipping but sometime catching. Or maybe the transmission is almost gone. Is there a burning smell? If so, probably clutch.
