Try one of these solution:
1.Try to get the latest update for your XP OS. (i. e latest service pack and update)
2.Try to download Driver for the audio to function properly (if it is external)
3. If you have a built-in sound controller Try to install your motherboard driver to update all its chipsets
4. Check your hardware stability by right clicking the my computer on the desktop, select properties, select hardware tab, select device manager button, under the sound, expand to see all the listings, check to whether audio devices are present.
5.Try to check in the control panel, select sound speech and audio devices, select sound and audio devices, click sounds tab, under the program events select one of those programs and click the play button if sound can be heard.

Installing sound drivers

First, visit this website:

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/gc/gc_drive.htm

Next up select Windows XP Professional as your operating system. Now click, "Drivers." The first result should be the Realtek drivers, which are what you're searching for. Download them. Once they finished downloading open the file and the drivers should be installed automatically.

If there's anything else I can help you with, let me know. If this solution solved your problem, please rate the solution.
