I changed the casing on my DS coz the hinge was broken but now it won't power on - the light flickers on and off when I press the power button. I have checked & re-checked that all the ribbons are pushed in as far as they will go but still no joy, is it beyond repair (I don't really want to pay £50 to nintendo)

Check the ribbon cables. One of them is not pushed in all the way. Check them all. Visually they may look like they are in all the way, but one of them is not.
Could be that one or both of the tiny fuses inside the ds have blown. You'll need to send it in for repair.Could be that one or both of the tiny fuses inside the ds have blown. You'll need to send it in for repair.

If you havnt had your DS very long you can easily get a replacement or sent off for repairs if not find a repair shop, they can practically do anything

it's likely that the top screen ribbon cable has either become damaged or loose, the entire top screen will probably need replacing (along with the casing if the hinge is broken).. if you are not confident with technical or fiddley things I wouldnt recommend attempting it yourself.
Yes its fixable but it depends on what has broken. There are two possibilities the small barrel hinge has broken, this is just a case of fitting a new one by opening the case, unscrew the light and gently pulling the top of the case away till you can change the barrel hinge. The other one is the case has broken and is not holding the barrel hinge, can bodge it with some glue sometimes but most often you need a new case.
There web sites where you can get a new case for your DS. When searching try using : nintendo ds lite replacement shell or nintendo ds light case modding
if you would have sent it to me first I would have replaced the case for you and you wouldn't have had these problems, but I can still help you out. I have a white nintendo DS lite in stock that I had to replace the bottom lcd display in. I will ship to you for $90 and if you are feeling adventurous send me your parts and I will take off $10 since I have no clue what is broken and what is not, but to me it sounds like the bottom lcd, touch screen , and circuit board are trash. there is a little black bar across copper colored connection wires leading into the tan connection box...lift it up ever so lightly by placing fingernail underneath... see http://www.instructables.com/id/SED515GFA0CVIFN/
warning... I have been replacing cover this evening for 3 hours only to find the right hinge piece that inserts into the lighted power tab doesn't rotate.... IE this was what caused the hinge to break in the first place and this torque/force problem causes the left hinge to break which is posted all over the internet and seems nintendo would have replaced all that for free anyway....I was searching this issue when I found your post SSLong hth
Try gripping them with a pair of long nose pliers and pulling them out. I'd advise a layer of cloth between plier teeth and rods, to stop them being gouged.
