I have an Emachine T2542 with Windows Xp. I had it turned on yesterday and was in the middle of editing some photos, when it shut off. There was not a shutdown screen or anything. It just turned completely off and now it won't turn on. I checked the outlet on the power supply it's plugged into and it is getting power.
It looks like your computer's power supply unit is gone. This is common with the eMachine T2542 series. Unfortunately, sometimes this destroys your motherboard as well.
HERE is a thread I found on another forum relating to the same problem. I guess you'd be better off trying to invest in a better machine. Sorry I can't be of more help. But do go through the link I posted, you may find it helpful.

You need to open the PC and check the power supply for some fuse and safety device that acts like a fuse , these fuse looks like a 3 leg transistor only that it have 2 , look for this , and of course the typical fuse . hope it helps

My t2542 keeps shutting down after about twenty minutes. I have replace the hard drive, power supply twice, reset jumper settings, and am about to conceed to the fact that it may be in the Mother board. It stays on to get through the boot but unpredictable when it will reboot.
