I have a 35' Dutchman with a rooftop AC unit. This unit has worked fine for several years until this past weekend when I tried to turn it on and something stranged happened. The fan blows fine, but the main AC unit seems to sound like it engages and then cuts out. You can hear the unit engage and then disengage as it does when the fan is taken off auto and left in the full on position and the temperature reaches the set temp on the thermostat. I can set the temp at any level and the AC keeps engaging and disengaging every few seconds. The unit is also putting out a foul smell my wife likens to burning wires yet to me it smells more like a gas leak. I am wondering what steps I should take to trouble shoot this- or if I should just skip it and call a service tech to replace the unit. Any ideas?

Multiple clicking sounds coming from AC unit before AC unit turns on or before furnace turns on.

the is a 24v wire that feeds from your thermostat to your unit, inside there is a contactor that engages, this makes a click sound as it really is a basic mechanical part the makes metal touch metal to allow current to flow through the system, perfectly normal, your hearing the low voltage engage the highvoltage at the contactor.

Relay (?) sticking Dometic RV rooftop AC

Go up on the roof of the unit and remove the AC Shroud. With the unit running, see if you can pinpoint where the sound is coming from. The only thing on the entire AC that would make that much of a vibration would be the fan motor. Not sure what would cause the fan motor to do this. The compressor may do that but only if the windings are bad and then it would not be cooling.

579 series, 13.5K BTU Rooftop trips AC circuit breaker in hot weather...

Is your condensing unit located in a well ventilated area and have an ample space, atleast a foot, from the rooftop flooring? Just make a check that free flowing outside air properly ventilates the condensing unit specially on high ambient temperatures. Hope this would solve your problem

Circuit Breaker and Dometic Rooftop RV Air

Its the watts you plug in too like ither 30 watts vs 50 watts. 30 watts will cause your wires to get hot in the unit. just pull down your breaker box and look at those white ground wires.
