TDK DVD burner

Tray does not open. Green light burns steady. Thanks

Thanks for your reply. I tried the paper clip but no luck. The clip goes in about 1 1/2 inches before it encounters resistance, then pushing does nothing. This is an internal TDK 440N burner.

Thanks for your reply. I was able to open the tray by pushing on the long inserted paper clip. The tray came out slightly and then I was able to pull it out all the way. However, when I powered up the computer and booted up the tray did not retract. When I pushed the tray in with a loaded CD there was no response by the computer. Do I need a driver? My operating system is Fedora Core 5. I installed the burner myself. I've been trying to download a user's guide or manual but so far no luck.

Hello Halderman

Two possible things are happening.
(A) There is a program that has the DVD burner locked.
(B) It is mechanically stuck.

To open the DVD drive tray, please, follow these steps:

(1) Perform a normal shut down of your computer.

(2) Straighten out about half an inch or so of a thin metal paper clip.

(3) Look closely at the bezel (front face plate) of your DVD drive and find the tiny hole there. It'll be about the diameter of the tip of the paper clip.

(4) Insert the paper clip into the hole keeping it parallel to the floor or desk. (In other words, insert the paper clip straight in - not at an angle.)

(5) Slowly insert the paper clip into the hole and gently but firmly push in until the drawer latch is released. At this point, the drawer will pop open slightly. Slowly pull the drawer out to get the DVD or CD out. Be careful when pulling on the bezel. They are often held on by tiny plastic tabs that break off easily.

(6) S-l-o-w-l-y close the tray drawer or leave the drawer open. The drawer will close when the computer is turned back on again.

If you have ANY more questions, comments, observations, etc on this topic, please, post back here. We'll continue to work the problem w/ you until it is resolved.

If the information I provided here enabled you to resolve your problem....

...would you kindly take just a moment to close the problem by assigning a FIXYA rating for my "solution"? I would be very grateful for your generosity and show of appreciation.

Thank you once again for using FixYa! Have a beautiful day.

Let's try a couple of other things:

    (7) Please, boot your computer into SAFE MODE. If you're unsure how to do this, please, visit THIS web site.

    (8) Once in SAFE MODE, open MY COMPUTER (usually by double-clicking on it)

    (9) **RIGHT** click on your DVD drive.

    (10) Choose EJECT from the resulting "context" menu

    (11) If this does not work, please, shut down (power off) your computer.

    (12) WHILE the computer is powered OFF, repeat the steps for ejecting the tray manually.

A paper clip may not be strong enough for this device's eject mechanism. See if you can find an angled allen or similar that is long enough and thin enough to fit into the hole and use it instead.

Some optical drives even come w/ an eject tool like I've described here.

My apologies, I didn't insert the link to the site I referenced.

I've searched high and low for documentation on this burner.

    (13) Do you happen to have any documentation that it came w/?

    (14) Did you install it or did it come w/ your computer?

  • Anonymous Apr 19, 2008

That's good you got it opened.

B4 inserting another CD or DVD, make sure that you can eject and retract the tray using the front panel button(s). We want to rule out the possibility of this issue being caused by unreadable media.

If you cannot get the tray to eject and retract using the front panel button(s) (w/ power applied), then the issue is not one of a driver for you Linux distribution OS. It is a mechanical or electrical problem w/ the drive. (I suspect the former.)

As I said, I looked all over for documentation on this device and could find none

Your only recourse is to return the drive or have it repaired. You can pop it in another desktop computer and see if the problem follows. I'm sure it will, though. But it won't hurt to try.

If the drive never worked for you, then you may be able to get a warranty replacement. If, however, you've had it for a while, then you may be stuck. In that event, if it were mind, I'd pull of the front face plate and tray bezel and have a look inside. You may have a gear or belt that has jumped off it's track.

Regarding the Helpful rating. Woud you mind terribly upgrading that to a "FixYa" as I did provide you w/ instructions for getting the tray open and for diagnosing the issue w/ your optical drive?

I'd sure appreciate the generosity and show of appreciation. I'll be happy to continue to explore the issue w/ you, too. :)

    Thank you kindly,

    BJ @:)

I have a Tdk burner worked fine until my husband had his buddy install some other burning software now my burner doesn't read there's a cd in it and it keeps opening up...still looking for original tdk...

Installing different burning software should not really affect reading capabilities of the burner. Nevertheless, it is not recommended to have two burning software packages on the same computer.

You can try uninstalling the new software that was installed on your computer, the reboot the system and check if that worked. If Windows does not open the disc automatically, you can go to My Computer and access the disc by double clicking on the TDK drive.

If you continue to have the same problems, please make sure the DVD burner is connected properly to the computer.

The Disk Tray will not open (TDK DED 440 DVD driver)

The lubrication inside your device may be insufficient or some mechanical problem has occurred inside preventing the device to open. Now, look at a very "small hole" near the Tray's front cover. If you see it, get a very small pin or even a needle to fit to that small hole. Now, press the "open" button in your device and then push that pin or needle in the hole at the same time to help the device to open.

The cd door is stuck - i cant open the door or close it, help? Tray does not open when switch is depressed. Green light burns steady.

First, you'll need a paperclip. Unfold it so there is 1 to 2 inches that is straight.

Now, look closely at your drive door. There should be a very small pinhole either above or below it.

Insert the paperclip. There is a very small gear that when rotated, will manually open the drive door.

Retract and reinsert the paper clip as many times as it takes to eject the drive enough so you can hold onto it.
Pull Out the CD or DVD Drive.

Now slowly pull the drive out until it is fully retracted. Remove your stuck CD or DVD, and slowly push the drive bay back until the door is closed.

I have the same issue with the LG GSA-H20L and the LG GSA-42N, but mine was with TDK DVDs.

I contacted LG Support and they told me that TDK disks are not recommended for use with their DVD Burners.

I asked them if there were any others they did not reccomend and they said no.

Going through my cupboard, I found Memorex Printable DVD-Rs that will burn OK.

I also tried Sony DVD+R and a generic brand, but they will not burn either.

I also found that these LG drives do not recognise Laser CD-R.

In short, for burning, try either Memorex, LG and some others, but don't try TDK, Sony or Laser.

Good Luck

Heres the website. You can also try upgrading the firmware for your burner. It might help with other DVD software packages.
