Hi there,

Well Sony has put out multiple models of the ps3 where some models are not backwards compatible. Many of the new systems are not backwards compatible. Most of the PS3 models simply cannot play older titles as they lack the necessary hardware and firmware. However, a few models do have backwards compatibility. The 20 Gb, 60 Gb, and original 80 Gb models all have backwards compatibility, either through hardware or software emulation. The other models lack backwards compatibility, so even knowing how to play PS2 games on PS3 won’t help you out much here.

Good Luck!!

Thanks for using FixYa!!

Hi, the only ps3 that can play ps2 games is the 40gig one this is the only one they made that was backwards compatible you could also play ps1 games on this ps3, how ever they are hard to come by now and the only real place you can get one from is the well know auction site.
The other thing you could try would be to go into your nearest game shop and ask them if they can get a backwards compatible ps3 they are out their but are hard to come buy new.

their is also ways of changing the firmware on your ps3 to accept the old games how ever doing this is illegal and i cant give you any advice on this as its banned by the site, how ever if you use google and type in how do i make my ps3 backwards compatible this will then list loads of sites that can offer the help your looking for

SOURCE: wont play ps3 games

I had this problem and it really made me mad. I tried re formatting , reset settings and nothing. Then I tried using some air sprayer that people use on computer key board and I sprayed in where the disc goes and now it works perfectly. Perfectly!

Go look on your PS3, find the model number. Now find a list of all PS3 on Sony.com or anywebsite, and if your Model number Says "backwards compatibility yes" that means you can play PS2 games on your PS3. Hope I helped.

If I find a ps3 which also plays ps2 disc (earlier model with starting serial# CECHA), will it still have the blu ray capability?

It should, yes. Blue-Ray is integrated into all lines of the PS3 console, while PS2 compatibility is not. The reason for this is PS3 disks are along the same type of format as Blue-Ray, speaking generally of course. PS2 disks are a different format, and the type of player needed to use them even varies among the PS2 consoles. Some PS2 games can't be played on more then half of the ps2 product lines, it depends on how old the game and console both are.

Have a ps3 120 slim. is there any way to play ps2 games?

Yes of course, thats what tops the ps3 i believe, go to game, memory card utility (ps/ps2), create new internal memory card, choose ps2, name it, ok, then put in ps2 game and it will act like a ps2! Regards

Will PS1 , PS2, Video Games Play on a PS3 ?? If Yes what type of gb?

In 60gb, I think. But if I remember right, you can buy an add-on to any PS3 model to play PS2 games. EVERY PS3 model does play PS1 games though.

Can a ps2 play ps3 games

Some models can, the 60 GB model can play all PS2 games, the 80 GB can play pretty much all PS2 games, the lower end ones (I think the 20 and 40 GB can not play PS2 games). There is a rumor however that ALL PS3's will soon be able to play PS2 games with a software update.. that will not be available until a few months into the future, if ever.

My 60 GB PS3 wont run PS2 games

Actually only 60GB PS3s supports PS2 games. But It requires particular firmware. In first instance try updating your system, then dissable the disc autoload function, insert PS2 game, and look at the game section if your soft will recognise it. If yes just try to play

Good luck
