Make sure that the AUDIO Controller in the system tray in the bottom right corner doesn't set to Mute...Please check it....Or maybe your audio device doesn't have driver to play sound. Please check your device manager to ensure if your sound device have it by simply following these...

I think I know what you mean because it has happened to me.....
When you choose a file on You tube the volume button(bottom left) is often on mute or turned down very low. It needs turning on and up. I hope this answer will help you and is what you are looking for

Please consider the following to solve your problem.
1. Make sure that your video drivers are properly installed and not corrupted. In case if you can hear the sound but cant see the videos. it could be due to a driver problem.
2. You havent mention what type of a video file you are trying to play but please make sure that the video player supports the type of files you want to play. for eg. Some version of Windows media player may not support the Youtube videos which you have downloaded from the internet.
3. Please ensure that there are no any virus in your computer.
