Uninstall the video card drivers and reboot.Windows will automatically reinstall on reboot.IF no go try your monitor on another computer ,if it shows properly you might want to replace your video card.

Regarding no picture in playback is problem mostly of dirty / clogged video head in Sony handy-cam and can be corrected by using good quality video head cleaning tape.
As far as memory stick picture concern, I think lost pictures (42)would be in other folder on memory stick.

The only thing I can find on this (and its silly sounding I know) is the following:
1) Moisture condesnation build up, leave the door open for 1 hour or more
2) The tapes you are using have write protection enabled
You are likely using the S-Video cable (multi-pin cable that connects to the front of the camera below the spotlight). This cable carries video but not audio. To get audio, use the multi RCA to 1/8" adapter (has red, yellow, and white cables and plugs into the side of the camera)
