If you are having trouble with the drive it is possible that the USB controller on the drive failed but the drive its self should be fine.

I would try the drive on another computer to see if it detects properly. Sometimes if the drive gets stopped improperly this can cause detection propblems but connecting it to another computer will force a scan of the drive that will repair any corrupted files that may be on the drive. Also check to see if the drive shows in disk management. The links below will show you how to check this.

How to change your drive letter in Windows XP

If the drive does not show up in disk management and the drive is not in warranty I would recommend opening the drive and connecting it directly to your computer to access the data.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

How do I transfer from my la cie to my computer

Remove the USB module from the LaCie Write Card and plug it into a free USB port on your computer. Your computer should assign a new drive letter to the USB module (such as D: or higher letter). In Windows use Windows Explorer (on a Mac use File Manager) and you will be able to copy files from your LaCie USB module to your computer.

Hello,
your drive has failed at either the power supply level or internal hard drive level.
First, please verify your power supply. When plugged into the power outlet, it should be silent. A defective power supply will hiss or have a high pitch noise to it. If it is defective, replace it and check if the issue is resolved.
If the power supply is silent, one or both of the internal hard drive is failing. If no data is needed, you can either replace the defective one which you will have to isolate by connecting the internal hard drives to a computer or with another enclosure and running a block scan software like hdTune which is free to download. The other option would be to scavenge the healthy drive and use it in another enclosure or inside the computer directly.
If you need the data and the problem was not the power supply, you will need to contact a data recovery center.

I have an old La Cie 160gb (maybe 5 years old?) - do you know the specs? rpm, for instance? I need something with 7200. This old one must be 5400, right?

Lacie drives have a 5400 RPM on there 160GB line nothing really changed until 500 GB to 1tB at 7200 RPM.

so the answer is 5400 RPM

Hope this helps please do rate and leave feedback.

Mac won't acknowledge Mybook!

try restarting your computer with the mybook plugged into it. also, leave it plugged in for a while and check back to see if it shows up on the desktop. I had a similar problem with my hard drive too, and this seemed to work.

Blu light flashing

This is most probably a faulty power cable, a common fault on La Cie apparently. Another cable got my disk working fine!

A clicking noise from a harddrive is defenenly NOT a good thing. It usually means that the harddrive is going bad.

LaCie 500 GB hard Drive - does not register on my desktop

if it is a USB (or you have low disc space), it does take longer to show up on desktop and patience is required... on my iBook it takes over a minute for my Brick to show up... Whether it is USB or firewire, do try another cord (I had similar problem with my lacie firewire external... I used a different firewire cord and all was fine. If you have tried these already, I hope you find the answer... good luck
