If the CD is the problem it could be scratched or dirty, clean the CD with a CD Cleaner if need be. If the CD mechanism is the problem the sled assembly may not be moving smoothly or is hindered ( the sled mech moves the laser across the CD like a needle arm move the needle across a record), the laser lens may be dirty also. Use a CD lens cleaner to clean the lens if you can not manually clean it with some lens cleaner and a swab. If the sled mechnism is the problem the unit may need to be taken in for service.

My emerson hd8197 compact disc player won't stop skipping

Hello Keira

Buy a CD Lens Cleaning Disc from Walmart. Run that a couple of times. If that doesn't fix it send it back.

Oh, it a portable Sony Disc Player clone. That means it has to be 15 years old or more. Actually, I found the date '18/6/2007'. It's a new 14 year old device that has been in storage. Emerson are a bargain basement brand and generally lack quality..

I have Marantz Sa7s1 cd player it plays cd for a couple of tracks & then it stops & distorted noise comes into player it skips sometimes

If it does all that stuff then, you need to take it back or exchange it. If you like the company just exchange it, if not buy from some other company.

New laserunit won't work

You seem confident enought to take it apart, have you tried cleaning the runners that the laser runs backward and forward on.
Some times they collect dirt/dust and the laser can't move smoothly so it jerks and skips.

In-Dash car cd player

It sounds as if you've covered about as much as you can do without pulling it out and taking to the repair shop. Something you should definitely do if all this skipping is taking place whilst the car is stationary. A lot of earlier car CD players wouldn't accept the burn it yourself type disks and perhaps the factory CD was damaged. Try a few more factory CDs before you do anything else. Just because a disk plays on the Computer or cd Player in the house doesn't mean it will behave itself in the car. If you've has the unit for a while you could have the smear of grease they put on the worm drive gummed up with dust and this is stopping the disk carriage from moving freely. Or perhaps the heads are out of alignment due to constant vibration from rough roads. Either of these problems would mean a removal and either a clean or the repair shop. BMW
