On my Brother MFC-290C the colors are not printing right....things are coming out looking yellow. I've tried using the function on the printer to have the heads cleaned, as well as changing ink cartridges.

Greyscale is color not black only.
You can print in black and it will look grayscale only darker, printers are a pain to work with after a year has gone by, I can expect almost a half hour to print something with my $400 epson because one of the colors is out even though I never printed in the last year a colored page. I take the color cartirges out and they are empty, but I only print a page 2-3 times a year. I use the scanner all the time. Brother and epson have their print heads in the printer not the cartridge so make sure your inks are always have something in it or it will be miricle for the printer to last more than a year. Check colors every other week. One Epson printer only lasted 3 months because I never used it(print head dried up). Never use the set up with tubes running outside printer to small tanks of ink if you only use it occationally.
Theres a definately way out by which the color cartridges can be disabled in all brother printers. One has to very quickly press the 'menu' button then immediately press the start button and then 'up arrow' to enter management. And thereafter you can choose to disable the colors. Better still take help of the service engineers who had visited you to provide on site warranty when your printer was under warranty. I'll get back with more details after talking to one such Engineer. Good luck
its in the right frontal corner, there you can change the catridge, i got a problem too with Brother MC-290, it just keep saying CANNOT DETECT YELLOW INK REPLACE IT SLOWLY... this **** cant print just with the black one? ireally need to print something right now
On your printer take a look on the "ink management button"press it then look for cleaning using the arrows up and down then press ok or set or what ever the command the printer will display just try to perform head cleaning.try for several times lets say 4x don't clean too much it might ruin all other color if it has no changes try to bring it to a service center, they can soak it to a chemical solution, the head is clog.
