The cam plate that the tensioner pulley is mounted on that rotates back around to tighten the belt as the cable or rod is engaged is likely rusted and worn, there is a bushing in this pivot that can be removed and cleaned fairly easily with a abrasive wheel or pad and lubricated upon reassembly.

Blades won't disengage

Hi,
When the mower is off and the clutch is disengaged you should not be able to physically turn the blade(s) if you can then you need to adjust the blade brake (look on the mower deck and you should see what appears to be a brake pad). Your owners manual will show you how to adjust. If you need a copy of the owners manual then I would suggest going to www.managemyhome.com and downloading a free copy of the manual for your mower (Need model number which starts is located under the seat).
Good luck!

The blade engage lever on my 42" craftsman mower will not disengage completely

Get a can of penatating oil and spray the pivot point of the idler arm on the deck. That's the one that moves back and forth when you lift the blade engagement lever.

Sputtering Mower

It might not be disengaging the mower deck all the way off. I had this problem on an older model.

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.
