It's F1

The bios will coach you with a "press f1..." message, unless you have an additional serial or network board installed.

In which case, those cards messages will over-write the onscreen "press f1..." prompt and you'll never see it. You'll have to remove those cards first, to access the motherboard bios prompt.

How to fix my acer extensa 4630z? Its boot manager is missing or corrupted.

First you need:
To enter Recovery Console in Windows XP, you will need to boot from the Windows XP CD.

Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD... message similar to the one shown above.
Press a key to force the computer to boot from the Windows CD. If you do not press a key, your PC will continue to boot to the Windows XP installation that's currently installed on your hard drive. If this happens, just restart and try to boot to the Windows XP CD again.
  1. Enter Windows XP Recovery Console. The Recovery Console is an advanced diagnostic mode of Windows XP with special tools that will allow you to restore the boot.ini file.
When you reach the command line (detailed in Step 6 in the link above), type the following command and then press Enter.

bootcfg /rebuild

The bootcfg utility will scan your hard drives for any Windows XP installations and then display the results. Follow the remaining steps to add your Windows XP installation to the boot.ini file.

The first prompt asks Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All).

Type Y in response to this question and press Enter.

The next prompt asks you to Enter Load Identifier:.

This is the name of the operating system. For example, type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition and press Enter.

The final prompt asks you to Enter OS Load options:.

Type /Fastdetect here and press Enter.

Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.

Assuming that a missing or corrupt boot.ini file was your only issue, Windows XP should now start normally.

How do i install operating system with external dvd

Hi
How to Install Windows XP on a Thinkpad T20

The Thinkpad T20 is a laptop computer from IBM designed for business use. This computer comes with the Windows XP operating system and--if necessary--can be reloaded with the operating system. All you need to perform this operation is the installation disc for Windows XP and a valid product key. This product key can be found on the bottom of the computer or with the documents included with the machine (if Windows XP was pre-installed on the computer).

Windows XP CDProduct key
1 Turn on your T20 laptop computer and press the blue "ThinkVantage" button.

2 Scroll through the options and select the option to boot from your T20's CD/DVD drive.
3 Press the "Enter" key at the welcome window and press the "F8" key once you have read (and agreed to) the license terms for installing the software.
4 Select the drive on which you want to install Windows XP and press the "C" button, followed by the "Enter" button.
5 Press the "Enter" button again to start the installation process. When prompted, enter the product key for Windows XP. Once the setup finishes, you can use the computer.

How do I rebuild the MBR?

Hi,

You will need an XP install CD for this and also set the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device.

  1. Watch for a Press any key to boot from CD... message similar to the one shown above.

  2. Press a key to force the computer to boot from the Windows CD. If you do not press a key, your PC will continue to boot to the Windows XP installation that's currently installed on your hard drive. If this happens, simply reboot and try to boot to the Windows XP CD again.
  3. When the Windows XP Professional/Home Setup screen appears, press R to enter Recovery Console.
  4. The Recovery Console is now loading but needs to know which Windows installation to access. Most users only have a single Windows XP installation so the choice is usually clear.
To the Which Windows installation would you like to log onto question, press 1 and then Enter.
  5. The Recovery Console now needs to know the administrator password for this Windows XP installation. Unless you are using a PC in a sizable business network, the administrator password is most likely the same password you use to access Windows XP on a daily basis. To the Type the Administrator password request, enter the password and press Enter.
Note: If you do not have a password or Windows XP normally starts without asking for one, simply press Enter.
  6. Type fixmbr and then press Enter.
  7. The fixmbr utility will write a master boot record to the hard drive that you're currently using to boot into Windows XP. This will repair any corruption or damage that the master boot record may have.
  8. Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your PC.
Assuming that a corrupt master boot record was your only issue, Windows XP should now start normally.

Regards.

Ntldr error on ibm intellistation z pro w/ xp pro

During the XP install, you will be given the chance to set up partitions on the drive. Blow them all out. Completely. Then recreate the partition and let XP install. I expect this will solve the nt loader issue. If, however, it does not, then use the recovery approach below to get the required loader files onto your boot partition.

  1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
  2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
  3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
  4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
  5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
  6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "d." This letter may be different on your computer.

    copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

  7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

How to change the boot option in IBM 6578-PBU desktop

I searched for hours for a solution to this. Here it is:

1). Restart your computer, NOT using ctrl - alt - del
2). Press F1 when guided to.
3). When you get into the config menu, select Start Options, then hit enter twice.

There are all the options you need! Cool, huh?
