Some segments of the LED display on my Sharp R320DK countertop microwave stay unlit. The segmets that do light seem to respond properly when various number ''buttons'' are pressed.

Hi,
Dimmed light might be caused by a slight contact between the panel's connector and the mainboard. Or, there is a dimmer option (feature) in the menu. Depends on model. Some of Panasonic microwave ovens are equipped with such a feature.

If all the settings work and the door closes ok . why throw it out ?. It may not be quite as efficient power wise as a brand new one. the few cents extra to run it against the price of a new one, I would stay with old faithful.
I'm not a repair tech but I have an R410Ew that's doing the same thing. This is a common problem on these models. Here is something to consider. I believe the control panel wasn't properly sealed off from the oven. Over time, steam, grease fumes etc may have compromised the bus connector contacts [3-2] and it may just need to be cleaned. The bus connector also may have vibrated loose. [3-8] is the 7 segment display that the bus plugs into. Be sure you unplug the power cord before accessing the control panel.. .
Not a complete answer, but may help describe problem: Our R-510B should be the same except for color, and for several years it has intermittently messed up its display. The left side two segments on the units digit won't light up. So a digit 8, without the two vertical bars on the left, comes out as a letter E reversed left to right. Any digit that uses the two left segments (traditionally labelled segments E and F when talking about 7-segment displays) comes out wrong. Every thing else works fine. I can't tell if this is your problem.
This is almost surely a bad contact at the interface between the LCD display panel and the PC board: Typically there is a "squishy" conductive strip that connects them, and I expect grease has gotten in there. If so careful disassembly and cleaning with a mild solvent should fix it. Since we can live with it, and it usually fixes itself in a few weeks, I have not got around to taking it apart.
