My Acer is Aspire 3100, and whenever I plug an external drive, mouse, or anything else in any USB port the computer hangs/freezes. The only way to restart it is powering down by power button (4 secs). OS is WinXP Pro SP3. Thanks for any hint/suggestion.

You didn't say which Operating System you are using. Without knowing the OS, Service Pack,or NorthBridge Chip set, this would be hard to fix.

If the System is XP, XP Pro with SP1 or SP2 I would Suggest Upgrading to SP3 release candidate2.

If the usb is failing or hanging then best thing is to update chip set firmware.

Download everest home, open and run, click on the + sign by motherboard, click on chip set, click on northbridge at top of right column and google chipset updates.

When i plug my 4g cruzer micro usb memory stick nothing happens the cpmuter dosnt read that it is plugged in

Try a different USB device on each of the USB ports on your computer.
Hopefully, all your USB ports are working correctly.

Try a different USB port on your computer.
Hopefully, the SanDisk will be detected on one of the ports.

Try a USB port on a different computer.
If the SanDisk still is not detected, then spend $10 to buy a new 4GB flash-drive.

Your new hardware might not work properly error will appears

Hi,
This error message comes up when you plugged in your USB Flash drive into a lower version of a USB port. Try using another port in your machine, ports that are USB 2.0 compatible and you shouldn't see this error again.
By the way, there are old motherboards which does not have ports for USB 2.0. You might want to check your motherboard user guide and see which ports runs at 2.0. If there is none, I'm afraid that the only way around it is to upgrade into a better motherboard.
Hope this help.

My iomega 320gb hard drive is just beeping when it's plugged in. I've tried plugging it into other computers, trying different USB ports, uninstalling it from my computer then letting it reinstall...

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Hard Disk not detecting?...How to recover data from it...??..Plz help...

Hi,

Even though it is possible that your USB hard driveis corrupt, but

before you finally conclude, try out these few troubleshooting

steps.

First of all, it is possible that the USB port that you are using is a

USB 1.0 port, which has a lower voltage not enough to

power on your Storage drive.

In this case, there are two things you can do,

1. Change the USB port you are using for the storage drive to a

USB 2.0 one (Just keep Checking all the ports one by one in case

you dont know which one it is).

2. If your Storage drive has external power facility, just plug it in

an external power first, before connecting it to the system.

If there are no USB 2.0 Ports on your system at all,

then just go to any electronic store and tell them you want to buy

a USB 2.0 Expansion card.

and if it is a laptop, A USB 2.0 PCMCIA card.

Install it on your system, and connect your external drive through it.

Meanwhile, before you try out the second option, test the drive on

a friend's system, that you are sure has a very good system, with

USB 2.0 port.

If after trying out all these, the USB Drive still doesn't work, then

I'm afraid, the drive might have been bad/spoilt.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem and let me know how it

goes

Hope this helps you out.

Thank you for using Fixya

I removed U3 stuff from my Cruzer micro 2.0GB; now I get message

I would like to point out that this must be something the u3uninstall utility did to the usb stick. Mine was working at full speed while I had the U3 stuff on there, and stopped working at full speed in both windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 after I used the tool. Sorry this isn't a solution, but it's additional info. It's strange it makes it seem like the problem is your OS or drivers and not the usb stick itself, or what the u3uninstall utility did to it.

Unknown device

Hello,
Plug it through different USB ports, even a USB Hub, or on a different computer. Sometimes rebooting solves the problem. I suspect it is a USB problem, especially on laptops with a small number of USB ports.
I have given mine up as dead several times, but it always comes back up gain.
Hope it helps.

San Disk Micro Cruzer 4GB

Hi there,

Try plugging it in to a different USB port on your computer. Make sure the connecter on the Cruzer is clean and there's no dust inside.

Also, try plugging it in on a different computer.

If none of these work,
I'm afraid it's a hardware problem and there's nothing that can be done about that.

Hope I helped!

Usb not recognized

if you use it on win 95 or win 98 or vista you need specfic drivers for you usb disk
if you get this on win xp please change the usp ports and use another port to insert the disk one of the ports has to recognise.
if the problem persists the usb port controllor on motherboards needs to be checked for faults or uninstalled drivers ,
if nothing works try a pci to usb internal card and dont forget to loaad drivers . this card has 3 to 6 ports for usb
