This is not a full solution, but I'll tell you what I did. Somewhere along the way, something worked.
First, I defrosted for about 48 hours. I turned it on, and the same thing happened, as if it was broken.
I took off the back panel (and also the support for the ice rack) mostly. I got all but the top bit off, so it hinged on the top (I was afraid of breaking the plastic. I checked that there was no ice around. I spun the fan, and wiped the grooves where the air flows (to clean it off a little). I put everything back together. It was tricky making sure the wires on the left did not get caught.
Bizzarrely, having disassembled and reassembled everything, it all started working again as if there was no problem.
Incidentally, the blinking light under the "5" seemed to indicate it was in test mode. I tried to somehow get it out of that by holding down buttons for 8 seconds or so, but that did not seem to work.
If this or something else works for you, please do post, but at least this worked for me, and it is worth a shot before buying a new fridge.
Incidentally, I have read enough to know that I will not buy a Samsung fridge again.
Samsung RL36SBMS keeps cutting out, it runs for a few hours the stops and gets warm if i turn it off and on again at the panal at the front it will start working for a while? any ideas?

Usually answered in minutes!
My fridge/freezer (Samsung RL36SBMS) has worked fine for 3.5 years. Then a few days ago, it starts making a rattling sound. Then a couple nights ago (after rattling for 3 days), it turned itself off in the night. Now, if I turn it back on, it runs for about 1 minute, the rattling starts, and then it turns itself off. The temperature display then lights up the number 5 only, which must be an indication of a fault.
The user guide from the Samsung is useless and provides no guidance as to what it means.
So far, I have tried to defrost it, but no luck. Any ideas?
