Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails toadjusthow do I adjust the convergence - 69189a5.pngnvergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

My screen looks like its 3D.

Your tv has a problem with the convergence, adjust it using the original remote go to the setting's menu then go to the convergence section. Adjust the convergence color red and blue the green color is your guide you cannot move this green color, then you should move the red and the blue in all direction left to right, up and down. If you cannot move the red and the blue far enough the convergence IC is defective it must be replace in order to align this convergence. Feel free to send feed back good day and best regards.

Tv out of foucs

These procedures are from the owners manual, go into menu and then picture quality and then: Convergence The Convergence feature lets you adjust the TV’s three tubes. When the TV tubes’ images are precisely aligned, they create the color images you see on the screen. Over time, the picture can drift out of alignment (this is normal). If your picture seems fuzzy or has a yellow tint, using Convergence could correct this misalignment. Only one convergence is needed for all inputs, regardless of the signal format. Note: Make sure the TV has been on for at least 30 minutes (TV needs to warm up for best results) before starting Auto Converge or Red/Blue Centering. When you select the Convergence feature, a submenu appears with three options: Auto Converge Automatically aligns the projection lenses to self-correct color images. You’ll see flashing squares of color dance across the screen (this is normal). Note: After performing auto convergence, use the Blue Centering and Red Centering menus to fine tune convergence in the center of the screen, if necessary. Blue Centering Aligns the blue and green images to fine-tune the picture. Red Centering Aligns the red and green images to fine-tune the picture. Note: The ability to change channels is disabled when adjusting the convergence options. The TV must be tuned to a usable signal to converge the picture.

My convergence is fine but after professional replacement of the board there is a slight bowing and slanting of in-screen borders and some channels have a little distortion at the top of the screen. The...

First: If the convergence board was replaced--the set may need a total adjustment---this is why most good techs replace the convergence chips and any bad parts instead--also costs less----Second: to enter the service mode (it is done with the set already turned on) should be Mute, 182 or Mute 183---if you get the convergence mode--7,8, 9 will select red, green, blue, 5 will stop the cursor from blinking and allow adjustment---with the cursor blinking 2,8, 4, 6 will allow you to navigate---depending on the remote used--the P mode button will take you across the screen in a series of steps--the remote I use for this has a button on it marked data save--this saves the adjustments. Your remote may have it or a different button for this.

Understand---if you get into the convergence mode---Green determines if the geometry of the picture is straight---red and blue are adjusted to it---to align the green you need to call the convergence mode up and then cover the lens for the red and blue---leaves you with a green grid---then you need to select green and wherever the grid is not straight adjust it--once you get it straight you need to uncover the red and adjust it to the green, and then the blue to the green---green alignment determines if the picture is straight---It sounds like this guy did not try to get the green straight and just adjusted the red and blue to whatever the green was.

My point here is if you paid money for this repair--either he aligns it straight or you should get your money back----GREEN never needs to be adjusted unless the dcu(digital convergence unit that stores the adjustments) has been replaced or the Convergence module has been replaced---I bet if the original convergence module was repaired(chips replaced etc) and installed you would not have this problem.

If the guy replaced the DCU then GREEN must be fully adjusted for a straight picture FIRST! then red and blue adjusted to it.

It is not easy or quick to Adjust the green--maybe he just wanted to get out the door?

I do this here for free so if this has helped you take a minute and give me a vote here.

I was just given this t.v because friends couldn't figure out what is wrong with itl. The colors don't line up right, looks kinda blurry depending on the lighting of the program being watched. How do i fix...

According to the manual:
1) go to the "TV Main Menu"
2) Select "Screen"
3) Select Adjust Projection TV (obviously only if a projection TV).
This then allows you to adjust the TV's 3-colors. Selecting GREEN CENTERING brings up a control panel that lets you center the green projection tube on the screen. Selecting RED CONVERGENCE or BLUE CONVERGENCE lets you align the Red & Blue projector tubes. Centre the green projector tube 1st. Then adjust the red & blue until the test pattern on the TV screen appers white.
Good Luck!

The Screen looks 3D & Colors don't line up on my big screen????

If the convergence is off more than 1/2 inch or so you can't adjust. you have a failure of hardware. most likely the output IC. This set has 2 outputs for convergence. Each output contains 3 circuits, Six circuits altogether 2 red ,2 blue and 2 green. The normal customer adjustment will only alow adjustment of blue and red. They should be converged onto the green. There is a much more complex adjustment in the service mode for Geometry and convergence. These adjustments are only needed when you replace a failed componnent like the output ic. These ICs have been upgraded several times since the production of this set. The latest and most powerfull version is STK394-160. If feel up to it I suggest changing both outputs and the corresponding output resistors. Then do a complete geometry and convergence alignment.

Convergence

Touch-up Convergence adjustments Enter the Digital Convergence Mode (DCM) by entering 0-6-2-5-9-7-(Status or Index) on the Remote control. The following menu will appear: Select an active channel or Aux Input. A signal must be applied to the set when performing convergence. If any Customer Adjustments need to be made, the Menu button can be used to toggle between the Customer Menu and DCM. The MPOSD ADJUST is used to center the Customer Convergence grid. A highlighted cross will appear along with the Convergence alignment grid. The highlighted cross should be centered onto the center of the Convergence grid. To perform a Touch Up Convergence, highlight SELECTION and press the right cursor button on the remote. The following menu will appear: Selections STORE, RESTORE FACTORY, and RESTORE DEFAULT are not shown after selecting SELECTION. Press the cursor down button on the Remote for these selections to appear. RESTORE FACTORY loads Convergence defaults from the Factory Loaded section of the Convergence Memory IC. RESTORE DEFAULT loads Convergence defaults from the sets software. To perform a Touch-up Convergence: 1. Enter the Convergence Mode and select RED TO GREEN or BLUE TO GREEN. Do not select GREEN (Green Geometry) without placing a Template over the screen. To perform Green Geometry, refer to the Complete in-depth Convergence. 2. Use the Cursor buttons on the Remote to Navigate from one adjustment point to another. Press the Status or Index button on the Remote to select ADJUST. Use the cursor buttons on the Remote to adjust the Red to Green or Blue to Green. Press the Status or Index button again to navigate to the next adjustment location. 3. After Convergence alignments are complete, press the Menu button on the Remote to return to the SELECTION menu. 4. Highlight the STORE selection and press the right cursor key on the Remote to save changes. 5. Use the GREEN TO RED or GREEN TO BLUE selections to perform convergence when the Green CRT has been replaced.
