Windows 7 states external drive 'malfunctioning'

I have recently bought an Acer Aspire PC with Windows 7. I have two different WD mybooks and one of them is being rejected as malfunctioning - in the hardware wizard the device appears and disappears constantly. There appears to be power going into the external drive and I can hear the noise of the disk.

You got two possiable issues here.

1. The ac apadtor not suppling enough power to the hard drive.

2. The USB controller insdie is faulty.

I have a solution for you. Take the hard drive out of the unit (if you care about your data)

1. put it into another external case witch are sold for under $15.00 at amazon.com or simply plug it into your desktop inside vai your SATA controller. If you have a laptop of course that will not work you need to then purchase a external enclosure.

Click HERE for my tip and video on how to get your SATA drive out of its case.

I have bought a WD My Book Essential and I want to install it. My OPS is Windows 7. Drivers software installation (the PC saids OK) " Yours device is ready for use" USB mass storage device...

You have to expand the "Disk Drives" device manager entry to see your MyBook Essential external drive.

These drives are formatted at the factory, and you should also be able to see it in Windows Explorer. It will automatically be assigned an unused drive letter, and accessible immediately.

Mybook WD25001032-001 keeps on flashing and won't work...what is wrong with it. I need help. Thanks

Hello,

Try plugging the usb cable on a different port on the computer. If the light flashing is red, then there is a hardware problem on your WD. If this is still under warranty, then its best to have it checked from where you bought it or to any authorized WD service center. If its no longer under warranty, then you can open the WD and check for any disconnection. The inside contains a harddisk; you may want to disconnect the two connectors from the harddisk and reconnect them again.

I got anew computer with windows 7 and I would like to use my wd mybook 500gb how do i get this to work my book is compatillite with windows vista/xp/2000

External Hard drives are not designed to an operating system version, they will work with any windows system. The only difference is between MAC and windows.

Remember windows 7 is designed for people who don't know anything about computers, so they can just use it without knowing anything.

So windows 7 will work with anything more then vista will.

Don't worry it will work fine with win 7.

I have an Acer Aspire 5532. There's a webcam on t he laptop but I can't access. I've tried downloading all the drivers or whatever and I still can't get to it. Maybe its different with Windows 7.

I recently purchased this exact same model - Acer Aspire 5532 from Best Buy. The laptop looks like it could possibly have a webcam on it because of a round piece where a built-in webcam would go but the box clearly states that this model does not have a webcam.

The drive letter for my external USB hard drive (MyBook) has disappeared from Windows Explorer. I tried My Computer/Manage/Disk Management and it is not listed there, either. I also tried powering down...

If it's not visible under Disk Management, then it means that your drive or cable is faulty. If the drive powers up when you connect the power adaptor, the cheapest thing to try is another USB cable. WD uses a standard A->miniB USB cable which you should be able to purchase easily - just take the original cable with you for reference of the mini plug, as there are a few different ones on the market. Or you can borrow such cable from a friend that has an MP3 player, an USB hub or similar device with same type of socket.
If this fails, I'm afraid it's the MyBook that's broken.

Formatted (on PC) 1TB WD hard drive cannot be altered on Macbook

What OS are you running? What is it formatted as FAT32 or NTFS and how big are the partitions. Various operating systems, hardware and formatting schemes have different limitations. If you want to use the drive in Leopard formatted with NTFS which is the only way to create partitions larger than 20 or 30 GB you may need to install an NTFS file system driver like FUSE.
The other option is to format it as HFS and install Macdrive 7 in Windows to use Mac formatted drives in Windows.

Hope this helps.

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 420 Desktop computer, running Vista, from Dell, including a WD 500GB MyBook external hard drive. The power button did not function from the get-go, but I was able to copy...

Unfortunately if there is no driver for Vista, then your out of luck. Since Vista is a widely used OS and getting bigger, then the MyBook manufactures must create a Vista driver soon or they will be in danger of going out of business. Just wait and periodically check the MyBook website for new drivers.

WD MyBook 320 GB Premium - Retrieving Data

You should buy a program called "Partition Table Doctor". I went through the EXACT same thing and it was just a bad partition on my mybook which is the EXACT same as yours is. It cleared up the problem for me. I still have problems with my mybook so i wish that I bought a different hard drive, but oh well.

but try "Partition Table Doctor", it will scan your mybook and fix any partition errors with it.

I was in the same boat as you over a year ago and trust me, "Partition Table Doctor" is a LIFESAVER!
