It's only free to download the latest maps if a new map comes out within 60 days of your satnav first accessing satellites or if you have a satnav that comes with lifetime maps. However you can buy lifetime maps. The lifetime map of Europe costs €85 and you get updates every 4 months or so for the lifetime of the satnav.
As long as you can see the software on the list of Maps, you'll be fine. It wont show any maps right now because there are no European maps for your present location, you need to be in Europe for the maps to show on the screen.
Eventually managed to speak to a man at Garmin who confirmed that it was not loading any European maps because it didn't have enough spare memory to load them all. He said that he would email me instructions for freeing up sufficient memory, the email never arrived but I decided to delet all the voice languages that were no use to me and all the other language 'help' files and tried again - it worked.
At no point did I get a 'insufficiant memory' warning, which would have been very helpful, nor is there any guidance for how much memory will be required when embarking on the update. Take note Garmin...
No. When you plug in the SD card, the Nuvi will load the map from your SD card. Once you get to the main menu, select the wrench symbol, then the map symbol and then "map info". You should see both the US and Europe map. Make sure the Europe map is checked. You can uncheck the US map. This is how you switch between maps. The reason why you have to have the extra map on the SD card is because the Nuvi can only have one map on it's internal drive, one at a time.
The 730, unlike the 930, doesn't come with European maps preloaded. You can find the most up to date Tele Atlas maps of the UK & Europe over at TomTom's Map Store.
Did you buy it in Europe? It could be a certain model made for Europe not to have FM radio. Or if you bought in the U.S. it should already be activated...
Also, if it has settings see if it has a place for region or country and change it to U.S. if it has it.
You cannot replace American maps with European maps. Garmin does this in order to protect the European retailers. The European SD card eliminates the need to load the maps into the 660, however, if you need to use the card slot to store extra data such as MP3s then you might be better off buying the 670.
You'll have to select the europe map and deselect the usa map. Also you might have to change the locales. to do the first thing
tap wrench/tap map/tap about there you should see both maps, select the one you need and return to the wrench menu, select locales slect change all and walk through the menus (especialy the country!!!)
