The Whisperkool 4200 unit is no longer cooling the wine room. The digital display is jumbled and will not reset when unplugged. The fan runs constantly but the wine room is only be cooled to 64 degrees. I suspect that this temperature is close to the natural temperature of the basement. The unit is about three years old but looks brand new. Can it be repaired or do i need to order a new unit for $1,700. This would be my second replacement in 5 years. Is this normal or unusual? My wine cooler is making a loud humming noise. It still cools fine, but you can hear it throughout the house now.

possibly the compressor is running harder due to either being low on freon or the condensor coils are dirty not letting the heat to be released causing the the compressor itself to overheat.

My unit is running but not cooling. the fans in the back of the unit are not turning and discharging hot air.

NOTE: This
is a multi-solution answer since I don't have all the tech from your question to pinpoint your problem
But the solution is in here generically, if you read and study the solutions very, very carefully.

Sounds like the cold control has stuck . Unplug the two wires from the cold control and plug them together. Turn one wire over and plug it into the other. away from the cold control.
The cold control is the knob in the ref that turns it on and off and has numbers on it. (Thermostat)
If it runs then that cold control (Thernostat) is the problem.
If that doesn't work DO THIS:
The relay on the compressor may need replaced
A relay starts the compressor with a higher voltage and then quickly kicks out
Thats what is happening with yours
Its best for a tech to replace The relay but you can do it
Take your model number to your Local Appliance parts store they will have a diagram
showing you how to install the relay. Its called a hard start relay
also try hooking the two wires together on the cold control to route around the cold control.

The unit ices and only cools to 65 rather than the 55 degrees that is set

Have you cleaned the condenser coils ? Is the unit too close to the wall ?

A layer of ice forms on the unit. Checked & replaced thermostat

here's the deal. unless you have a license to purchase freon you can't. Most likely the unit contains r-22 freon unless it was made before I think 1987 if made before then it is more than likely r-12. The reason appliance techs do not want to do this is because of the intensive set up in orderto access the system to add freon. they have to weld connections to access the freon and in such small areas it can be a massive pain. I would contact Whisper cool and see if they have any service centers in the area where you can take the machine for repairs.

Good luck hope this helped

Whisperkool 4200 icing up

Hi, Bob:

Misery loves company, so I'm posting this even if it isn't in time to help you.

I had an XLT 8000 with similar problems. Vinotheque wanted to do the exchange program ($2,500+), and I was told the older aluminum coils might have leaked, and the exchange models come w/ SS coils. I was near to biting on that, when I decided to have a local refrigeration shop check it out.

Here's what they found--A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. It seems there are small copper capillary tubes that circulate the refrigerant. If they touch each other, with normal operating vibration they can wear holes in each other and the refrigerant can leak out. The leak can be very slow. According to the guy who fixed it (all for $219, and much of that was for drilling out the riveted-closed enclosure), "crossed cap tubes" is a Bush League mistake, akin to not putting oil in your car's crankcase.

I'm not saying WhisperKOOL/Vinotheque did this on purpose, knowing there would be an eventual failure and an opportunity to make another sale. But what the service guy told me was that IF the manufacturer was without scruples, a crossed cap tube would be the perfect way to take advantage of an unsuspecting customer.

My fix? Drill out the rivets, and find a local qualified service tech. Fixed in hours for $219 or in weeks with an exchange for $2,500... You choose.

Ice is forming on the outlet holes on the face of my 4200 xlt

you should check to see if the fan at the back of the unit is operating, and you also need to check for dust build up, if the fan is working then clean and defrost the unit, try it again, make sure there is nothing blocking the airflow, if the motor is not running, replace the motor, hope that helps

Cool air outlets frozen over with ice

And the temperature hasn't changed at all (still set at 55ºF)? A troubleshooting guide says you can check if the cause is because too much heat was lost to adjacent areas, and you can try to add more insulation around the ductwork and ensure doorways and glass panels are sealed. Other than that... not sure. If it's older, maybe you can look into a new Whisperkool split system or cooling system (there's some great ones on http://www.vintagecellars.com).
