Hello. Most likely there is some sort of debris in the optics. You can verify this by pressing the "USER TOOLS" button (usually located toward the top left of the operator control panel, although I dont usually deal with the 3515) and select "counter".Then select print counter. This will generate a copy of the meter reading of the device and this print will come directly from the engine of the device and will eliminate everything that has to do with the optics. If this print looks good(no lines) then you know that the scan glass and/or the mirrors are dirty. If this is the case then you need to turn of the copier. Now, lift the document feeder completely up so it rests in the up position. You of course will see the LARGE platen glass in front of you which you might place a document on in the event that you need to copy something that you cant run thru the automatic document feeder.BUT, look to the left of the large glass and you will see a SMALL strip of glass that is about 1 inch wide and as long as the large glass. This narrow strip of glass will cause lines on any document scanned thru the document feeder if it is dirty. The dirt may exist on top(where you can easily reach it but perhaps have to strain to actually see,or on the backside which will require the removal of the left index plate and the top edge plate (5 screws) and then the removal of the large platen glass. This will give you access to all the optics.Make sure the power is off before you jump in.Once these items are removed clean the back side of the small glass(at this point you can actually remove it for ease of access using a soft slightly damp cloth.Since you are this far,you shouls also clean the mirrors, the illumination lamp and its reflectors with a soft cloth. You may reach down and manually pull the scanner assembly to the right as it normally would move (as if it were making a copy) in order to gain better access to everything, once again using a soft cloth. There is now need to worry about the position of the scanner assembly when you are finished since when you power up the device it will seek and find its "home" position by itself.I bet you will have just solved your problem. Take care :-)
