LCD The LCD of my DCR-HC17E is not showing the menus when I switch it on. The screen remains dark as if I did not switch it on. However, when I close it, I can still see the images through the viewfinder. could it be that the connecting flexible strip between the LCD and the camcorder is damaged. Is this replaceable or once it is damaged it cannot be changed. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me cawcaw

This is usually caused by a defective CCD image sensor and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

If you close lcd screen in its position, do you see image in eye piece (view finder) ?
If yes, then replace flexible ribbon connecting wire between camera board and lcd board to get picture in lcd screen.

If you see correct picture in Eye Piece view finder but dark picture in LCD that shows problem with connecting flexible wire between LCD board and Camcorder main board. It got cracked/ damaged or broken after some time due to open/ close of LCD in its position.
Replace that flexible wire and problem will be solved.

Most likely, you can not, ribbon cable connecting LCD assembly to main board is broken and it comes as hinge assembly. So, you will have to buy at list the part from sony.

You have lost the lcd backlight, probably the backlight power supply, this is very common. What type of laptop is it?

DCR-HC19E has cracked/ broken flexible cable, connecting LCD and main camera board.

How often have I heard the phrase - Read the Manual - however I admit to a slight case of panic as I have an important bit of videoing coming up soon....however as the Manual says... The solution to LCD touch screen hotspots not working is re-calibration.
With the Sony DCR-HC22E (also the HC17E/HC19E and HC 21E still Digital Camera this is achieved by
Eject the Tape
Disconnect any Connecting Cables except AC Adaptor or the Handycam Station
Slide the Power Switch Down to turn on the Play/Edit Lamp WHILE pressing the Disp/Batt Info for about 5 seconds
You should then get a screen with a cross in one corner
(The manual recommends touching this with the corner of a memory stick however I GENTLY touched it with a biro. In my case a further 2 crosses appeared and after touching them the LCD Was Re Calibrated.
I re-started my Camera and all the touch spots ( Fast Forward, Menu etc all worked perfectly) Remember you cannot Re-Calibrate with LCD rotated
