Please clarify for me. what exact system model nuber do you have? or if you know it what cpu socket nuber do you have?
please repost your question with the following
1 exact name and model nuber of system. usually located on the back of the tower and sometimes right on the front also.
2 if you have opened it and had a look directly at the cpu socket you could just re post with the socket nuber.
either way i will be able to help if you tell me either of these 2 things thank you.

Is there a cpu upgrade for an hp pavilion 6835 with a motherboard 115561 cognac 20000731

The fastest Pentium 3 that will work in your board is a Intel Pentium III 1GHz chip. Here is a link to the specs:
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium-III/Intel-Pentium%20III%201000%20-%20RB80526PY001256%20%28BX80526F1000256%29.html

You could also get a Intel Celeron 1.1 GHz but it only has half the level 2 cache size so it's actually a bit slower than the Pentium III 1GHz chip.
Here's a link to celeron specs:
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Celeron/Intel-Celeron%201100%20-%20RB80526RY005128%20%28BX80526F1100128%29.html

your socket is mPGA478, so it will be compatible with:
Celeron (Willamette) 1.5 GHz - 2 GHz RK80531RC041128 (BX80531P200G128) Celeron (Northwood) 1.5 GHz - 2.8 GHz RK80532RC072128 (BX80532RC2800B) Celeron D (FC-PGA2 package) 2.13 GHz - 3.2 GHz Celeron D 350 Mobile Celeron 1.2 GHz - 2.5 GHz RH80532NC060256 Mobile Pentium 4 processors (micro FC-PGA4 package) 2.4 GHz - 3.46 GHz Mobile Pentium 4 552 Mobile Pentium 4-M processors (FC-PGA package) 1.4 GHz - 2.6 GHz RH80532GC064512 Pentium 4 1.4 GHz - 3.4 GHz RK80546PG0961M (BX80546PG3400E)

I want to upgrade my hpdv1000 pentium M processor whats the maximum upgrade allowed for this? i have upgraded it to 2gb ram from 512mb and 250gb hd from 60gb and its doin fine.

You should be able to upgrade the CPU, since it seems that the DV1000's motherboard uses a socket CPU design. But, obviously, HP would rather have you choose the CPU that you want from the beginning and stick with it.
The first thing to do is to check HP website to see what other configurations were/are sold for your model. If they sell it with faster CPUs then you can upgrade to one of them...

PLEASE NOTE:
In order for a particular processor to be compatible with a particular laptop:
(1) the processor must be physically compatible with the laptop socket, in your case I thing you have a Soket 479 processor
(2) the laptop chipset must support the processor.
(3) the chipset front side bus speed must match the processor front side bus speed, in your case 400Mhz.
(4) the laptop BIOS must support the processor.

So I listed here processors with FSB at 400Mhz, I gues that DV1000 as a 855GM Motherboard that supports only 400Mhz with Socket 479

Cpu installation

Hi,
In most P4 motherboards there is no setup necessary to change from a Celeron to a Pentium CPU. Just remove your Celeron chip and insert your Pentium chip. All settings should be automatically configured by your mb bios and operating system. This is assuming that your bios setup is set to auto settings for your CPU.
Good luck!

How to ID CPU compatibility?

You should try to find the manual of your mobo. Search the manufagurer website for the same model number. It usually lists all compatible CPUs.

Socket 478 is for Intel Pentium 4, Intel Celeron, Celeron D and Pentium 4 Extreme. But that doesn't mean your motherboard supports them all. You should still check the manual.
