Are you using original toner cartridge or refilled cartridge ?. If this problem comes to your original cartridge, then better to replace with another original cartridge. Dots comes to your refilled/ recycled cartridge is due to the problem of its drum, doctor blade, wiper blade, pcr rollers etc.. and check weather your cartridge is getting leaked, if so replace a new one. Some times transfer roller and pressure roller and scanner assembly insdie the printer may damaged or dusted due to insects. Open the machine and check all these parts.

Hi Richard,
Dots, Lines and smudges on the printouts are usually due to deteriorating cartridges and cleaning the green drum of the cartridge may help temporarily. Take out the cartridge and inspect them. You may observe the lines on the green drum. Gently clean the roller/ green drum with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth wiping off the toner dots marks/ lines. (corresponding to the location where you are having a green line on the paper)
Also, make sure that the visible inside of the printer are clean and there is no spilled toner inside, which sometimes results in dots.
Moreover, streaks (thicker lines) and dots etc indicate faulty PCR Roller which is located behind the green drum inside the cartridge. Observing the PCR with the help of a sharp torch light would let you assess the condition of the PCRs at the corresponding location where lines are appearing. Replace the Cartridges one by one and inspect the prints for the changes. I think you would be able to identify the faulty cartridge/ rollers. Also, if the waste toner area is filled and/or the plastic wiper/ cleaning blade removes the leftover toner/ waste from the drum and holds the waste is worn out, it results in spilled toner usually at edges and at early stages lines only.
Moreover, the function of the fuser is to fuse the toner onto the paper and it is usually done at the end of the printing process just before the paper is ejected (and the image/ toner on the paper is just fused - not changed). The fault at the fuser area usually results in smudges, ghosted image or unbind toner (which easily gets erased when touched). The time during the printing cycle when the toner is spread on the paper, additional toner (resulting in lines) is shifted to the paper due to cartridge related issues, which results in lines. Note that after cleaning the rollers, the print quality improves and the lines disappear or lighten. Try and check if the above suggestions work.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

Try cleaning the toners and see if it makes any difference. You would also have an idea about the toner drum/ parts quality etc and check if they need to be replaced. Furthermore, issues with Laser Unit like dust/ toner dust on the lenses and mirrors inside the printer usually result in faded or discolored prints. For instance, faded text/ picture at certain areas or any color missing when you print.

When making copies one edge of the paper has three dark spots. Look as if they could possibly be roller marks? Something need cleaned? Thanks

hello

probably right, remove your toner drum and clean it with tissue paper or smooth cloth, this dots happen when your roller drum has some spot on it due to ink powder and also slide the tiny button on the fuser kit to clean it.

thanks

Using Brother Printer HL-2040, not so many pages printed, but have some dot in pages about 3 black dots and some fade letters. what should i do to clean drum?

Remove the cartridge and look carefully at the rubber roller. You have debris stuck on the roller that needs to be removed. Get a cotton ball and dab some rubbing alcohol on it. Then run the cotton ball back and forth over the rubber roller making sure to use a clean section of the cotton ball each time. Now advance the rubber roller and repeat with a new alcohol cotton ball. Do this until you made it all the way around the rubber roller. Allow to dry for 10 minutes and then insert the cartridge back into the machine.

Vertical fainted dots in the middle of the page

turn on/off, unplug, wait a minute, plug back in, should reset.
take all paper out. check to see if any paper is jammed in the rollers or if there is something causing the ink dispensary to dribble
go to application folder for your computer, dbl click icon for make of printer, for settings, check to ensure everything is order. run a 'test' print to clean the drum, this might help
lastly, check make of printer trouble shooting web site for more information
hope this helps, good luck.

Vertical dots on print output

1 1/2 inches apart would correspond to the diameter of the primary charge roller. You have one chrarge roller inside each toner cartridge so you need to determine which color the dots are and then replace that cartridge.

Lines down both the left side of the printouts.

good day,

this usually occurs when you print large volume of copies of documents that goes beyond the printable area of the paper, some powders stick in the roller of your printer hence making the gray streak.

you can check if the rollers have accumulated some powder, if so, have the rollers cleaned.

i hope this will help.

Black dots on copies.

Try using the roller cleaning or wire cleaning procedure in additional functions. If fault persists, it might be toner build up on the fuser roller from dots worn onto the surface on the fuser rollers.
