It's a known problem with windows and the 30gb ipod video. itunes 7.7.1 and later will corrupt your ipod beyond repair unless you have a mac. if you have a mac, then you should be able to restore it just fine. also in the past apple "accidently" released a pack of ipod videos with a virus that will only affect windows computers. when the ipod is plugged into a windows computer, it will either cause the blue screen of death or it will leave your ipod corrupted and again can't be fixed without a mac.

Ok, well we need to perform the restore.

unplug the ipod. then plug it back in, make sure noting is useing your ipod, no windows into the ipod disk are open or any programs expt itunes is on. (close everything else you dont need expt itunes)

Then try to restore to a new version.

restore instructions

  • Note: Because Restore erases all of the songs and files on iPod, make sure to back up any files you've saved on the iPod disk. All of your songs, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and games can be loaded back to your iPod provided that you have them stored in your iTunes Library.
How to restore your iPod:
For Windows:
  • 1. Make sure you've reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.
  • 2. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer.
  • 3. After a few moments, it will appear in the source list in iTunes.
  • 4. Select your iPod in the source list and you will see information about it appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
  • 5. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download of the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
    • Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
    • Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
    • Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.
    • Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software on your computer.
  • 6. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will instruct you to leave iPod connected to your computer to complete restore.
  • 7. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
  • 8. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

Formatted my touch and now it just shows the apple logo then a apple skull and is not getting recognized on mac book

You may need to restore or update your iPod, iPod mini, or iPod nano by placing it in Disk Mode if only an Apple logo appears when you turn it on. If this happens, the iPod software may have been damaged. Put iPod into Disk Mode, then restore or update iPod's software. Put iPod into Disk Mode. iPod should appear in the iTunes Source pane and on the desktop or in a Finder window, or in the My Computer window. If a message appears that says the volume could not be mounted and asks if you want to initialize the disk, choose to initialize iPod's disk. Use Mac OS Extended format (HFS Plus) if you have a Mac, or FAT32 if you have a Windows PC.

Warning: This process cannot be undone. All of your songs, videos, and other files will be deleted. Always make a backup of your important data.
Follow the steps to update or restore iPod. If you manually put iPod into Disk Mode it may need to be reset before you can use it. If you cannot put iPod into Disk Mode after performing these steps, it may need to be repaired. You can arrange for repair at the iPod Service Website.

In Europe, please schedule a service appointment with either an Apple retail store or a local Apple Authorized Service Provider.

In Australia, simply complete the online iPod service request form or take your iPod to a local Apple Authorized Service Provider.

No vedio

I just checked the apple site. To reset an iPod turn the on/off switch on and off and then hold down the menu and center button until you see the apple symbol. According to apple, that should reset it.

30GB 5th gen ipod video does not play any songs

I have had the same problem on my sisters ipod. Unfortunately I could not fix it. You can take it down to the apple store and have their genius bar look at it, even though most of the time I know more about ipods than they do they will at least be aware the problem exists. I pulled the hard drive out and put it into another iPod to test it. The hard drive is fine. My best guess is that a transistor or something on the circuit board went bad and is not allowing for that function. What I did was sold it on eBay as broken for $86 bucks. I then went to apple.com/store and scrolled to the bottom left of the page and they sell refurbished ipods that appear new with the same warrenty as a new one. We bought my sister a 80GB classic for $179 minus the $86 we got from the broken one. It was nice to have the new one for less than a $100 total. It's either that or find someone that knows how to replace the circuit board which costs around $70 bucks used. Good luck.

Unlock my Apple iPod 30GB

From Apple:

----------------------------
Connect your iPod to the primary computer you use it with (the first one iPod synced with), and open iTunes. When you disconnect iPod from the computer, it will no longer be locked. If you can't unlock iPod using either [the code or connecting it to the computer you use to manage its songs]. . . you can restore your iPod to factory settings using iPod Updater. Please note that this will erase all data on your iPod. Afterwards, you can add your music and data back to your iPod. If you want to change the primary computer that your iPod is associated with, do this: 1. Restore your iPod. Warning: The restore process cannot be undone. All of your songs and files will be deleted. Always make a backup of your important data. 2. Connect your iPod to the computer that you want to be the primary computer. 3. Open iTunes and synchronize.----------------------------

Restore

Windows and MAC each want to format the player in their own way - using both on one iPod = eventual death for your iPod (and mass confusion, frustration in between). Pick a computer - format the player for that computer only. Make sure that all songs you are trying to load are in the right format suggested by the user manaul. WMA files are trouble - avoid them if possible (if you want, I will give you clarification on this).
