Try running the cartridge cleaning. Most likely one some of the ink jets are clogged. You can also try removing the cartridge and cleaning the ink jets with some alcohol
Try cleaning the cartridge by taking a damp paper towel and wiping the ink jets. If you still get the problem, try running the cleaning cycle. If nothing works, then try a new cartridge.
Try a different version I had it happen to me, so if it did it using 9.0 adobe acrobat reader I would go to 5.0 or 6.0 version instead and then it would solve my problem everytime it's a hassle but don't know any other way around so that's my best advice.
The printer will take a little quantity of color ink though you are printing in black in order to get good quality. Hence it is not possible to print with just black ink cartridge without color cartridge.

According to the manual to remove the print cartridges, you pull back on the top of the cartridge and it will snap out of place. Then pull it up and it has been removed.
