Hi,

The nozzle may be blocked. So take out the colour cartridge and place its nozzle in a bit of water for about 10 mins. Bring it out and dab the nozzle with folded paper. If the tissue is blotted with the three colour it means you have unblocked the nozzle. Try now to print after returning the colour cartridge. You may need to repeat to get good results.

Thank you!!

My brother mfc290c stop printing black too. I cleaned the heads & replaced the ink cartridge with no luck. Then I read a suggestion to clean the printer head of dry ink by saturating the sponge at the bottom of the printer with a solution to soften the ink on the head. When I located the sponge, I found it had a large area of dry ink and was saturated with liquid black ink. I wiped the dried ink away with q-tips & soaked up the remaining ink with folded paper towels the size of the sponge. It took a dozen to absorb most of it. Then I ran the cleaning cycle a couple of times and now its printing black again. Clearly it was preventing the printer head from wiping off any excess ink onto the sponge.

Hi,
No many of the printers will need to have both the color and the black cartridges to work...
You will have to purchase and install a new cartridge to get it working correctly.

Brother MFC-290c printer does not print black anymore. Test print page color ok but not black printing. What is the problem?

The problem is either:

* out of BLACK ink -- replace the ink-cartridge

* clogged ink-jets -- the ink is not spraying onto the paper, so run a few print-head-cleaning cycles

* dead electronics -- not triggering the jets to spray ink, so replace the printer

My Brother LC61 Series printer does not print - printer is less than 1-yr. I purchased new ink cartridge a couple days ago, however, all of a sudden, the printer will not print.

1st question that should be asked, is was it a genuine Brother approved cartridge with the right value of filtered ink?

If not then the jets will be possibly clogged.

if you return it for repair to brother under warranty, make sure its fitted with genuine cartridges otherwise warranty is void

On your printer take a look on the "ink management button"press it then look for cleaning using the arrows up and down then press ok or set or what ever the command the printer will display just try to perform head cleaning.try for several times lets say 4x don't clean too much it might ruin all other color if it has no changes try to bring it to a service center, they can soak it to a chemical solution, the head is clog.
