If the feature codes show as inactive, the phone system is not seeing the voicemail. Hopefully this has been fixed by now, but you may need to call in a Vendor.

Inactive feature message displayed when we try to access any features on our M7310 phones. This occurred after a power outage.

Dear customer..here is the solution

Sometimes when you put a new (or alternate) voicemail system on a Norstar switch, The feature codes that accessed the old system stay in the KSU memory. If this is the case all of your feature codes will appear inactive even if the voicemail system is operating correctly.
To fix this issue you need to run an External Feature test (XFtest) to identify and remove the leftover codes from your KSU memory. You must have a programming set to access this menu (M7310, M7324, T7316).
Power down the Voicemail unit. Remove connection to voicemail ports from KSU.
1. Press [Feature] **938378 (XFtest). The password will be 266344 (Config).
2. Your display will read Feat code: and you will have options First and Exit.
3. Press First. The first stored feature code will appear, and you will have options Test, Back, and Next.
4. Press Test. Your options will read Remove and OK. Press Remove.
5. Once the feature code is removed, press Next to go to the next code.
6. Do this with all codes until your display reads None Registered
7. Release
Restore connections to the voicemail ports from the KSU. Power the system back up.
The feature codes will be restored to the correct defaults with the completion of the voicemail power-up cycle.

F 981

If none of your voicemail feature codes(f980-f989) are active, then that means that the system doesn't recognize any nortel voicemail on the system.Which means that a) your system has a non-nortel voicemail system attached to it, b) theres no voicemail attached to the system at all or c) the voicemail is no longer functioning.

Feature Button

Sounds like the voicemail either is disconnected from the phone system or has lost power to the voicemail.Open the cover to the voicemail and see if there are any lights on in the system. If so then disconnect the power tho the voicemail for about 30 seconds. the voicemail could take up to 10 minutes to fully reboot.

I have M7310 phones with the complete system I can not seem to be able to activate our mail box system, we tried entering f:981 and F:983 however it says feature inactive

If none of the voice mail feature codes work (feature 980-989) then the voice mail system is either not working or isn't recognized by the telephone system.Go to your communications closet and check to see if theres a power light on in the voicemail. If not then you might want to call in your tele system service provider.

Hi there, Feature 983 gives me inactive feature message, can't forward calls, voice mail not working, etc. We had a short power outage the night before these symptoms began. Do I need to turn the power off...

Cycle the power on the voicemail system and that should solve the problem. If you still get the "Feature inactive" message, you may have to replace the voicemail power supply or get the voicemail system repaired.
Good Luck!

Norstar T7316 voicemail is somehow "inactive". Also the feature 983 is showing inactive so I cannot reset system..help

Sounds like the voicemail system is locked up and needs to be powered down and powered back up.
The voicemail, if it is a Call Pilot looks like a small gray box which looks like this in the photo: http://presstelegram.kaango.com/resources/img/itemimages/JUN/491159/LO10559_491159_06302009144332-large.jpg
You can unplug this unit for about 15 seconds, then plug it back in...
It will take about 5 minutes for the Call Pilot to re-boot, then you can dial FEATURE 9 8 3 to ensure that it has come back up.
Good Luck!

Norstar Flash problem

Cycle the power on the voicemail system. If that does not work, you may have to replace the voicemail power supply, or send the voicemail system for repair.

Norstar: Inactive Feature (981)

This generally happens from one of two things. Your voice mail system is connected to your phone system through a station port. If it loses connection it will not communicate with the phone system. Loose wire or connection can cause this. or it has just crashed and will need repair or replacement.

First thing you want to do is unplug the unit wait 15 minutes and plug it back in. wait 10 minutes Try feature 981 from a set that has voicemail. if nothing. hit feature 985 from a m7310 set or a m7324 set not a m7208. If it comes back with inactive fearture now your connection between the units is bad or the unit itself is bad. If it comes back with the voicemail intercom # and you cant get into any mailboxes it has lost all programming.Try this first.
