After much dispute sony finally agreed to replace my motherboard on my vaio vgn-fe31m because the graphics card which is inbuilt brokedown.
When I receievd the laptop back, the cmos battery was dead. My question is....is the cmos battery on the motherboard?
Regards,
Rob.
Yes the cmos battery is on the motherboard.
Every motherboard that runs a computer has a backup battery to run the circuit while turned off. This battery runs the real-time clock (RTC) and is referred to as the CMOS battery. By keeping the clock active and running even when the computer is switched off, power up/down cycles can be logged and before the internet, your computer could keep dates accurately. It also serves to maintain the system configuration settings in BIOS memory based on RAM or FLASH RAM.
Yes, It varies from motherboard to motherboard so you'll have to look it up in order to replace it. But if it was mine I'd be back at Sony telling them they failed to repair my notebook properly. In the more than 25 years I've been working on computers I've only had to replace the CMOS batteries on two computers.

I want to know for sure if the cmos battery is o the motherboardbecause originally sony said that because the built on gaphics adapter was dead it needed a new motherboard and they wanted 900 euro for the replacement because it could not be repaired. I eventualy otthem to replace it for free and as soon as I had it back, the CMOS was dead. If the CMOS is on the motherboard then they probaly didnt instal a new motherboard. Before I go back to sony I want to know for sure that the CMOS is on the motherboard but cantfind this info anywhere.
