The scroller and some of the top buttons will not work without the driver. Many other buttons do work fine without the driver. This is an old keyboard and I think they only made a driver for Windows 2000.
If the backspace key is not working they keyboard is probably defective.
i dont know if this helps but the polarity of the power source going in to the keyboard may have an affect on it, i have one of these keyboards myself and on the back of the keyboard there is a schematic on how the polarity of the power source should be
Hello, May i know why you going for a new keyboard???
I mean a few months back few keys on my keyboard stopped working and i too was thinking of getting a new keyboard .. when my cousin suggested me to just replace the keys which don't work.. And i found this company who sell individual keys with all the underneath fittings in a reasonable rate, www.laptopkey.com
You could try them out if you need just a few keys
Sounds to be you just got a faulty keyboard from HongKong, if your old keyboard works except the the Z and the new keyboard works only with function keys, then it sounds to be that the new keyboard is not ment for your laptop. if anything you should of had the same problems as your old keyboard. try using a USB keyboard.
If there is a lock feature, its probably on it as a function key. (maybe the F1, F2, etc keys?) Function keys are usually a different color and need to be used while pressing the Fn/Function key (could be called something else, just look for something other than shift/ctrl/alt/windows key).
Sorry to hear about your keyboard problem. Keyboards go bad and I don't really think it was a key combination or anything you did. I've replaced many, many keyboards in Latitude D610 machines and I can tell you that they do go bad after a while.
The good news is that if you want to replace it, you can find them on eBay or other sites at a reasonable price. Replacing one takes less than five minutes and all you need is a small flat head screwdriver.
I just got a dell inspiron 1720 and got a chunk of food under a key. And like you was not sure if the key was removable or not. well it was.. I GENTLY pulled it up and it poped off. It has very small groves that clip onto retaining wires.. very small and fragile looking. not saying yours is the same but if you can see under the key since it is up a little you may be able to tell... it was harder then I thought to put the key back on... pushed pretty hard and then POP it was on... If you dont feel comfortable doing it take it in. And like I said yours may not be the same as mine. if for some reason it is broke where it wont go back on, you should be able to order a new keyboard for it, IF you feel you can change one out.
I had exactly the same problem - ie Logitech MX3000 keyboard with remote mouse and only the "F mode" key and few others seemed to work around the top of the keyboard, but I don't think I had the SetPoint software. So I found it and downloaded it (www.logitech.com/setpoint).
As soon as it was installed I was asked to secure the keyboard by pressing ctrl alt and F12 and then I had to type in a 16 digit code (given on screen) and then my keyboard started working again.
I didn't have a spare keyboard so I used the on-screen keyboard (Start - All Programs - Accessories - Ease of Access - On-Screen Keyboard).
I would be more inclined to think that its a mechanical problem. You didnt indicate how long youve been using it or how heavy a hand you have while typing but I think its probably a safe bet that the keyboard hasn?t worn out from use. I have had problems with lightly constructed plastic keyboards that are slightly bowed or warped in spots. The keys dont always make a connection with the contact below so your keystroke isn?t registered. Warped areas can easily extend over several keys, thus your clustering.
If this is the case there really isn?t much you can do to repair it other than call the manufacturer if its still in warranty. If not you can experiment, perhaps there is some extra plastic in a critical area that wasn?t removed. Be warned though, not many keyboards these days are designed to be taken apart and reassembled easily.
