Pump was working fine but now only makes a humming sound.

Yesterday my Hayward 1.5 hp pump was working fine. I had been filtering & backwashing, then back to filtering on and off in the afternoon (the water level was too high and I wanted to lower it back to normal before I started to vacuum). I turned it off for a few seconds to switch from filter to backwash (I heard it's better to turn it off when switching functions - is that true?), and when I tried to turn it back on it just made a humming sound and wouldn't turn over. I let it cool overnight thinking it probably just overheated because it was VERY hot, but now it's the morning and it still won't work. What is the cause of this? How can I fix it? It has been running off of an extension cord since we got the new pump (2 years ago) and we have never had a problem. If I get a 14 or 12 gauge cord, will it solve the problem and start working again? I thought that the pump had thermal overload to protect it from completely burning out and that it would work fine once it has cooled off. Now that it's the next morning and still not working, I am very concerned. I don't want to have to buy a new pump - they are expensive and this one is still pretty new. Your help is very much appreciated!

First, Yes you need to turn off the pump when switching from filter to backwash. And Yes again get a heavy guage cord so you don't burn out the windings in the motor. The thermal will usually stop the motor from catching fire after the damage is done.
Now your problem; Water can be put under pressure but you can't compress it. Air on the other hand you can compress. If you had any air in the tank and didn't get it out while switching from filter to backwash. When you shut the pump off that air will expand at a rapid rate and rush back through the sustem. This will cause the impellor to spin off the shaft inside the pump and bind up. If you take the pump apart and look this could be your problem.More often than not your threads on the impellor will be runed so yopu probally need a new one and a new seal but cheaper than a new motor. If you take it to a pool store they can do this for you for a small charge or just the price of parts. While you have it there have them check to see if you can get a left hand thread impellor screw to lock the impellor on so this won't happen again. Most motor shafts are already drilled and tapped for this. The left hand thread can't spin off and will keep the impellor in place. Also be careful not to **** air when draining water from pool.Good luck.

Is my pool pump filtering correctly?

The cloudiness or turbidity of your water indicates a leaking or damaged filter membrane/element. The green color is due to the growth of algae. Are you using the right algaecide? Is the dose right? You have to consult a water treatment specialist to know these.

My pressure or psi has droped for some reason its a hayward new 1 hp pump about a year it should be running at about 10 psi I know when the psi rises I need to backwash as I have a had a pool now for about...

Some thoughts.
I have a Hayward pump. The other day my gauge jumped a gear inside and suddenly my pressure went up 5 psi from 15 to 20. After I backwashed, I saw it didn't drop and opened the gauge and saw the problem.
What kind of filter do you have? If you have one with filter cloth, like DE, a torn or damaged filter cloth could cause a drop in pressure.
Is filter flow better or worse than normal?
If flow is lower, there may be something stuck in the hoses, pump suction, impellar, pump discharge or discharge hoses or even filter valve.

These are some areas to check, pretty much in order of likelyhood.

After vacuuming the pool, put the filter on backwash, started the pump and it didn't run. It's making a slight humming sound.

Two things to check, Is the impeller fractured? Remove the motor to check. If the impeller is intact, now that you have the motor off, take it to your pool supply place and ask them to check the start/run capicator which is the second thing to look at.

1/2hp Hayward Pump for existing inground pool

you will be fine with the 1/2hp. The Hayward will move quite a bit of water as well. It may not move as much water as the 3/4hp but it's very close and the 1/2hp will cost a little less to operate so if anything, you may just have to run it for one additional hour per day to compensate. You will be surprised how much water a 1/2hp will move. The only issue with smaller pumps is if you have pop-up cleaner heads or a suction driven automatic cleaner such as a kreepy krauly, however, if a 3/4hp will run it, a 1/2hp will run it as well. You can install a larger motor on the super pump but it will not move more water unless you upgrade the impeller as well. Just make sure you don't use a bigger impeller than what the motor is rated for because it will strain the motor and cause it to overheat. Hope this helps.

How do i drain my pool with a hayward variflow pump?

To Flush out the filter with the backwash setting. The backwash setting releases trapped particles from the filter back into the swimming pool. You may need to alternate between the rinse and backwash settings until the water runs clear in order to unblock your filtration system and flush out clogs. To Rinse away dislodged items from the backwash setting. The rinse setting flushes clean water through the pipes and carries away any particles or clogs freed during the backwashing. To Drain the pool select waste on the multiport valve. This sends the water directly to the drain rather than back into the swimming pool. Close the filtration equipment and stop the pump with the closed setting. You should only use the closed setting when you turn the pump off. This function allows you to remove the strainer basket, clean the filter tank and perform other swimming pool maintenance on the filtration system.

No water coming out when I backwash. I cleaned

water level must be about the discharge (eyeball) in the pool to back wash. Check the hose connections to make sure that hoses off the the filer head are going to the right place Look for the words "Pump" , "pool" and "waste" molded into the valve. I've seen it a number of times where "Pump" and "pool" were connected the wrong way.

Hayward pool motor shuts off in backwash mode.

Check the pump suction filter? To backwash it, is to
open the backwash tank cleanout valve, to clear the dirt out. If this does not work, check the pipelines going to the backwash tank for clogged lines.

Just bought a used hayward filter, about 4 years old need diagram.

Line from skimmer connects to front of pump, top of pump connects to inlet of filter and outlet of filter goes to pool returns. Inlet and outlet of filter should be marked on filter and most Hayward filters that use backwash valves have valves that come pre plumbed to fit filters. Hope that helps, with pictures or models of filter and backwash valves that's about all I can tell you. God luck
