Sounds like perhaps you have the incorrect foot. Did you perhaps purchase a quilting foot (used for piecing)? A free motion foot is actually shorter in height so it will not contact the feed dogs or needle plate. It is this added space that allows the fabric to be moved freely under the foot. Also, be sure to drop the feed dogs.
If the presser foot is still too long, perhaps the shank is not correct for your machine. Sorry, am unable to locate information re your particular model.
I'm guessing this is an Elna air electronic SU? If yes, then the problem is with the diagram inside the right side of the machine where your air control foot pedal tube feeds in. I havent' done this repair myself, I took mine to my favourite sewing machine technician. But if you are technically able, try joining the Yahoo Group called Elna Heirlooms, and then go through the threads there, there's been discussion on this repair before.
unless it has been progressively getting slower, I did have a simular issue. My pedal was getting "stuck" at the 1/2 mark. (wasn't pressing all the way down). Drove me nuts. Took the machine apart, cleaned oiled, cleaned again blah blah blah...when the pedal was the last option took it apart and found a nut from a screw had gotten inside the pedal and stopping it from pressed down. There could be a burr, a nick or something it is catching on.
Does it work by pushing the Start/Stop button. If so the problem is probably with the foot control. Make sure all connections are secure. You may need a new foot control. Contact your local Viking Dealer and try one of their foot controls to determine if it is indeed the foot control or something else. what is the name of the machine? do you want a manual? the feed dogs are what move the fabric thru the machine, the presser foot only hold the fabric against the feed dogs so the feed dogs can move the fabric the feed dogs in the needle plate area should be up
it's definitely not suppose to be jumping ahead. have you checked the foot your using on the machine to make sure it's on correctly? you might also check the feed dogs to see if there in the up position, in the needle plate. if nothing I suggests works then I agree to take it to a janome dealer & let them sew on it & see what it does with them
There could be a couple of general reasons for this to happen.
First, the tension in the bobbin holder could have tightened when you were trying to fix the needle. I don't explain them, I just know strange things happen when you try to fix one thing.
Secondly, I can't tell how old your machine it, but I know that the mechanism that holds the bobbin holder can become jammed and the thread wound around it. That too will cause the bobbin to not feed properly. You need to be sure the area around the bobbin holder is clear of all threads.
How did you try to change the position of the zipper foot? Did you just change the needle position and move the foot to the other side or did you do something else? I'd need to have more information to tell you anything more specific.
I had this problem, too. I found out that I just had the wrong foot on the machine. Not all of the feet can utilize the IDF, the foot has to be "open" at the back in order for it to engage. Simple fix! Hope this helps.
I had the same problem. It started after I took the cover off to fix something else. After I screwed the cover back on, I kept getting the E1 message even when the foot was already down. I took the cover off again, and I found that there is a metal tab at the top left of the front cover, that is pushed by a metal tab in the back that moves when you put the presser foot up or down. You can see this metal tab moving in the back if you put the foot up and down with the cover off. Just putting the foot down(I think) before putting the cover back on fixed it so one metal tab is on the correct side of the other metal tab.
