Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model Logo
Posted on Jun 20, 2010

The mower deck clutch cable broke so blades will not engage and lever is loose on my Sears Craftsman 42-inch lawn tractor (917-271-742). I fished out the top piece of the cable, about 12 inches down to a rusty point where it broke. If I get the clutch kit (175067), which includes the cable, spring, etc., can I replace it from the top, or do I need a lift to get to the mover deck from the bottom? I do not have a lift or ramp that would work. What would I need to remove to get to the location where the cable/spring assembly hooks up to engage the blades?

I just got the kit 175067. Have the old one off except for where it's attached to the lever, schedule and weather has kept me from going further. Very simple to reconnect things at the pulley and above but not too sure how to connect the rest onto the lever and haven't had a chance to get a good look at how the old one might be connected yet. Should be a simple fix.

The cable broke which engages my blades on my craftsman 17 .5 hp 42 inch. I need a model part number for the same . I have lost my owners manual with that information

locate mod # on tractor may be under seat
go to sears.com click on parts direct and enter that number and it will take you to the parts section for that mower.

I have a 18.5 hp 42" electric start craftsman mower. when i went to engage the blades the lever was harder to move than usual and once it was engaged nothing happened. blades not turning! please help.

When you move the lever and engage the blades you are also engaging the belt that drives the blades and sits on top of the mowing deck. Chances are that belt either came off one or more rollers, or broke. The only way to check it out is to get down and look on the top of the mowing deck. Get back and let me know what you find.

Craftsman 42" mower deck won't disengage

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.

Check proper belt routing. These models are a little tricky. Also check tensioner spring.
