AV cables don't pass surround sound through, they are pretty much just left and right stereo. You need to turn pro logic on on the reciever to "pretend" to play surround. The better option of course would be to use a digital signal like another HDMI cable or digital optical audio from the cable box, if thats what your using.
Hi,
you can play TV through any projector if you use an external tuner. This could be a satellite tuner, freeview box of similar. It has some type of aerial, cable or satellite input and handles channel changing etc, and sends a picture to any attached external display.
Most tuner type devices will have a Scart or 3 x RCA outputs, modern equipment may have DVI or HDMI. Avoid HDMI initially if possible would be my advice, simply because the copyright protection can be a real pain. You'll need to make separate provision for audio (eg, attach your hifi to the tuner)
You will need the optical cable. My receiver only passes video through the hdmi. So I hooked up the HDMI cable to the tv, and the optical cable to the receiver. Once that is done you have to go to the audio settings for the PS3 and chose audio through the optical.
you need a HDMI connection for your stereo. HDMI is an all in one cable so if you don't get your sound in/out you need to hook up to just the RCA's, if you get a reciver that has an HDMI input you will solve this. then you go HDMI to Reciver then HDMI to TV
